Blackberry Bold 9700 Battery
Hi,
I'm still somewhat new to Blackberrys since I just received my first smartphone, the Bold 9700 a bit over a week ago.
I'm wondering if it's normal for the battery to only last about 1.5 days. I use a decent amount of apps, including Google Maps, Shazam sometimes, Tetris occasionally, and the built in games.
I keep reading about how great the battery life is, but, in the long run it's been now about 1.5 days and I'm worried if I'm not careful it wont last the day. It's currently at 30%.
Do most batteries last longer? If so, how long? If not, what should be expected? I don't do much talking. Mostly data usage.
Thanks! - 03-02-2010, 01:29 PM #3
I have always been happy with any device that has the power to go through the average day. I handle 60-80 email/calls a day with 2000+ minutes a month and still come home with a minimum of 40-50% left when I drop it in the pod to charge.
I find that charging the phone while I sleep works well and wonder why others want their phone to run days without charging!
I have found that a Blackberry without a lot of crap running in the background get some of the best battery mileage there is in the industry.
What would you do if you got your battery to stretch to 3 days, what would happen if on the 3rd day you had a business crisis and need to all of a sudden spend a couple of hours on a phone call! Just does not make sense to meLast edited by greggebhardt; 03-02-2010 at 01:33 PM.

From what I've seen in the couple of months I've had my 9700, if you're using it fairly often during the day and using apps that download a lot of things, like podcasts and music services (which I believe Shazam is, yes?) then yeah a day and a half is about right. I've burned up my battery life in a day downloading several large podcasts XD but usually it can go a day or two with moderate use. On weekends when I don't use it much because I'm out and about and surfing on my real computer instead of the BB, it will last all weekend without a charge. I'm trying to get myself in the habit of charging every night no matter the battery level, so I won't get caught with low or no battery the next afternoon.

I'm lucky if mine lasts a day LOL, but then again I'm a twitter addict (refreshing every 5 mins, along with my manual refreshes), BBM addict, 100+ emails a day, 100+ sms a day, 2+ hours of calls, plus viigo, facebook, MSN, TFLN, weather app (updates every 30mins), and about 1 hour worth of browsing... So 1 day is good for me! LOL

I get about 1.5-2days out of mine, and I use the crap out of it. I have twitter refershes and FB updates and BBM and emails and Gtalk all day. So really it depends on your use. I would say 1.5 days isnt bad.

Thanks for your replies. I guess it means my battery life is average. Do most of you shut the phone off at night or leave it on? I'm careful not to leave apps running, but I guess with my usage it seems right for a new battery? I'm not an extreme user but I do use it a lot.
Just another quick question, I am looking at the charging pod. Does it fit with the bb silicone skin still on?
Thanks again for your help!

I discovered the other day that I had left the Google Maps Latitude feature active. That probably explained why my battery was down to about 50-60% or so remaining at the end of each day. I turned off Latitude Report Location to Friends and now battery life is back to my usual, down to about 75-85% remaining at the end of each day. I recommend reviewing all your applications. Also make sure you are not leaving Bluetooth and Wifi active all the time, even not required. They all use us battery life.

i believe one of the blackberry 10 commandments is thous shall not turn off thy blackberry... therefore i dont lol then again i cant as i am on call on the time so i need my device on to get calls in the middle of the night if needed.
as for the dock question, no the oem dock for a naked (no skin) device... you may be able to get a Seidio charging dock and cut small holes in the side of the skin, as the seidio dock is designed to be used with there hard innocases... so i cant say that will work or not... i was barely able to get my new otterbox to work with the seidio dock... most docks are designed to be used with the device being naked with the exception of the seidio dock, where that one is designed to be used with there innocases and extented batteries....Check out my Theme blog

Me being a power user, I only get 1 day out of mine. Sometimes less

My thinking is that if I can easily make it thru the day, I am very happy. I'm a power user also and never worry about the battery. I don't see the obsession of wanting it to last 3 days. When I leave my house in the morning, I want my phone to be fully charged. Besides the 9700 looks good in the charging pod ;-)

i dont tend to bother switching off at night, i have checked a couple of times and my 9700 only uses 3-4%max overnight! oh and i think your battery usage is pretty much normal, i average 2-3 hours usage per day and the battery will last about 2 days and still have some left in the tank!

My 9700 is set to go off @ 12 each night and on again @ 6 am. I top the battery up during the day, rarely for more than 1/2 hr. or so. I also check quite often what is running in the background. I have Smrtguard and Berryweather updating in the background.

mine is pretty much on 24/7, most of the day with wifi active, and more than likely MSN, GTalk, GVoice, facebook, and Ubertwitter with positioning running on a 10 minute poll. I get maybe 40-60 e-mails a day, and maybe 10-15 min talk time a day, tons of IM and BBM.
On a day when i'm out and about a lot and running IM non stop, I will dip down to 10-20% charge by 10 or 11 PM at night. On a day when I'm working from home and I only have Ubertwitter active, and I do most of my IMs from my computer, it's closer to 60-70% charge left.
I sometimes get a tad frustrated with the battery life, but it's no so bad considering how long each day i'm actively typing or checking messages on the thing. My Xperia X1 was way worse than my 9700 so I"m at least thankful I can usually get through one day without looking for a charger.
EDIT: oh.. and gsync in the background as well keeping things current...Last edited by lazyjai; 03-02-2010 at 04:39 PM.

during the week I'll let it go 2 days without charging, but the weekends seems to need a charge after 1 day when I go to bed it will be at 25-30%. so I'd say your battery is about normal.
the devil didnt make me do it, but I probably would have anyhow.

Here are a couple of tips:
1.) Make sure that when you're closing out of apps you hit your bb menu button and choose to close or exit. Like some have mentioned above some of the apps will drain you pretty quick, so you might want to be careful that the only things running in the background are things you need running in the background.
2.) Make sure that you are running the most updated official OS to get the best battery life. Check the 9700 forum stickies to stay abreast of the latest in this department, as well as to get the full instructions for installation/etc.
Currently, for the 9700, .442 is out...and IMO it's a-rawkin! I'd gotten pretty shytte battery life on some of the other OS's (namely .330 and .423)...but on .442, I'm loving it. I'm personally a very heavy BB user (sometimes onwards of 7hrs of talktime in a day depending on what's going on with my business) and my battery life is quite amazing in spite of what I put it thru.

Yes i agree. According to ILoveBlackberry I use it for at least 5h a day. And that includes pretty much everything. However my 3G is not on. I have also noticed a difference when i charge using the USB (lasts longer) as opposed to the mains charger. Anyone else noticed this?

Thanks all for your very helpful replies! Much appreciated!
I've been following those suggestions. Always closing apps the proper way, and my OS is up to date.
I guess I have nothing to worry about with my battery. 2 days of usage before charging seems about right.
Thanks again!Last edited by ryguy2008; 03-02-2010 at 09:46 PM.

Lots of threads on this issue..I use about 40% in an 8 hour work day. I use bbm, text and msn throughout the day and open facebook and ubertwitter for updates every so often.
Is it just me or do themes make a difference? I have just created an all black theme with no effects and transparency and I get more battery life out of it. Not to mention that it's hella fast!

I can get a full day out of my battery and I consider myself an above average user. Some things I do to maximize my battery life is leave my phone on EDGE while at work, or if I'm on a long phone conversation. I only really use 3G if I'm going to be tethering or streaming music, basically anything data intensive.
