ATT dropped calls & data stops working on 9700
So i've been using att for about two months now since switching from Verizon.
Everything was fine at first but recently i would say within the past month i've been dropping calls and having problems with the data services.
I'll be streaming slacker radio and all of a sudden it stops and i have to reboot to get it working again. The dropped calls thing is pretty much random.
Im running 5.0.0.405.
Anyone else having this problem? I mean the whole surfing while talking thing is nice but if this keeps up im going to have to just bite the bullet pay the early term fee and switch back! - 02-05-2010, 08:22 AM #2
Where are you and have you reported it to AT&T?

Oh, you too? I've been having similar issues since July. Randomly, my data will drop out and stop working for an hour, sometimes more, like clockwork at almost the same time every night. I've called AT&T and argued and complained and "troubleshooted" until I was blue in the face. They tell me the problem's on my end, but I say it's on theirs, because this has spanned over two different BlackBerrys. (They also tried to say that with my 8900, the reason it was doing that was because it was unlocked and a T-Mobile branded device. They can't explain why it's doing it on the AT&T branded 9700 I have now. Geniuses.)

This has been a common problem, especially in big cities. With the inlux of all the iPhones, ATTs data has skyrocketed resulting in sub par data connections.

Welcome to ATT - the common complaint of EVERYONE with them.

Been having same issues since January 6. Calls fail, red clock on sending, up to 40 mins to receive emails on blackberry.net, duplicate emails arriving, slow/non working browser, and when running a diagnostic test it says bb registration -no, connected to bb - abort. This diagnostic test is fine most of the time, but every once in a while it isn't.

I have ATT for my work BB 9700 in the NYC Metro area and I hate it. Data just freezes, 3G is spotty and calls drop all the time. My buddy has ATT on Bold 9700 as his personal phone and his calls always drop also.
I only have it because my work pays for it, I will never give ATT my money. I am going to be getting the Tour 2 (Essex) on Sprint once it comes out. I have been a Sprint customer for over ten years and love their prices and service. - 02-05-2010, 10:05 AM #11
Same issues here. Funny thing is I usually only lose direct TCP connections (medianet, pandora, slingplayer, MMS) Anything that runs through BIS is FINE. Problem is definitely on at&t's end

Bottom line-the demand for cellular sevice and data is so great, the quality is taking a nosedive on ALL carriers.

I'm in the Valley Forge area of Pennsylvania.
Haven't reported it to ATT yet. Don't know if I will. It has been my experience in the past that carriers can rarely fix these kinds of issues and I may end up with some "refurbished" replacement bold that some tech "tested" from some other customer who sent theirs back and put it back in the box to be handed out again.
It's not worth the trouble if it keeps up ill just switch back to Verizon. I'll probably wait for a new version to come out from RIM before giving up though. - 02-18-2010, 12:46 AM

There seems to be a handful of posts with people having similar issues on other carriers.
I wonder if it is a 9700 issue.

Well the ATT rep I just got off the phone with just about admitted it has to do with the 3g coverage, although he couldn't explain to me why a battery pull fixes it.
At this point i've pretty much decided that when the Tour2 comes out, i'm moving back to Verizon. - 02-18-2010, 12:10 PM #19
That still makes no sense to me. I'm in an area where there's no 3G and never has been. My data stops working when I have full EDGE, and it didn't start until July of 2009. Something's changed on THEIR end, yet they continue to insist it's my problem and my phone. I'll put solid money on it that it's due to the iPhone 3GS and the AT&T network's inability to handle the data load from it, because this didn't start for me until AFTER that phone was released.

Not that this is a fix but I have tested the trial and it works for me.
It might make it a little more bearable. Instead of battery pulls it takes like 3 or 4 seconds and then 3g is working again.

So I did a wipe Friday night and things are looking promising so far.
I know, I know, it's too early to really tell for sure, especially since it's the weekend, but the 3g seems to be running pretty strong and flawlessly both from home and at work.
Just a heads up in case any of you having the same issue decide to try a wipe... I had to end up calling att who passed me along to RIM support because I couldn't get my personal email after the wipe. Didn't have any options to add them. Even tried resending the service books and that didn't work. RIM said they had to do something to tell the network my phone was there. Who knows what they did exactly.
