9700 substandard compared to competition
I am wondering why the 9700 is so sub standard compared to the competition and why it was released this way. I know that RIM likes to conserved bandwidth and money but - this is not competing well with the android and apple's of the world.
skimping out on so many potential parts and services like ram, like price which is way too expensive in the app world, like no flash yet, like being behind with the browser and having to play catch up.
android nexus one specs are far ahead of any blackberry - now coming
with real time email and other options included as default, and its going to
have 10.1 flash for the release. 1 Ghz processor
rim does not have the edge any more
Iphone does not come with - real time email but through Gmail you can get it free .. and the next Gen iphone will have a 2 Ghz processor not to mention iphone has the app market hands down.
I know RIM is working very hard on so many fronts but .. will the consumer simply forget about them and go with the next best thing .. if they don't start competing with better hardware, since their history has been evolutionary instead of being revolutionary
BBM is not a reason to buy a phone. There are plenty of other IM SW apps
I am not out here - to cut anything up, more concerned than anything else.Last edited by vx1; 01-07-2010 at 05:37 AM.

Agreed.
Our devices are antiques and no one likes to admit that.
I'm growing old of my 8900.
9700 ain't that much better, played with one.
Anyhoo.
Flame away. - 01-06-2010, 01:58 PM #4
Say 'like' 10 more times, turn 180 degrees and return your 9700.
Its a wonderful phone and I wouldn't trade it for a Droid or to be an iPhone fan boy.

9700
but you see what I am saying .. right .. bold 9700 is a great device .. no doubt and I got a 3gs too ..
I am sorta frustrated with the low end parts they are putting in to conserve
vers keeping us on top of the market
I am not sure what rim got planned and no doubt they are looking at the game as a whole instead of one device .. but as a business - you want the users to talk up the hardware in the market right .. and promote it for you - 01-06-2010, 02:05 PM #6
Many of you people that are unhappy with the Blaclberry should not have got one on the first place. It is not a toy and if you want that the iPhone is going to be better at entertaining you.
The new Google phone has a trackball! WTF is up with that? - 01-06-2010, 02:07 PM #7

I was disappointed in the build quality of my 9700. I've had a bb since the screens were black and white, and I still plan on keeping one.
I returned my 9700 with intentions of getting another one, but the next 3 I looked at were no better. So now I'm back to my 8900, hoping that I can wait a few more months and get a better quality 9700 somewhere.

Noobs don't understand this.

I've been using Blackberrys since 1999.
So don't even tell me to go buy an iPhone or call me a fan boy.
Not sure whats up with your personal jab Mister Fubaz.
Like, like, really.
RIM is not innovating to their fullest extent.
The Storms are a fail.
The 9700 came with a crippled buggy beta OS.
And now they're releasing a new PEARL?
Get real.
RIM is bumming me out.
Just admit it. BB as they are, today have absoutely no engineering WOW factor at all. Push email? Aswesome. Yay.
Still a 3.2 mp camera?
LOL.
I will hold onto my 8900, and wait, and wait..........flame away.

I keep kicking myself for purchasing Bold 9700's recently. For me anyway, I love the push email and BBM but the shortcomings in apps and multimedia are killing me. Whereas on Android and iphone their shortcomings are easier to overlook and/or work around. Again, I feel this is on a per user basis. I've always been a devout BB fan but it's hurting lately.
If BB does email so well why can't I mark a yahoo message as spam? Just a recent example. It irks me that iphone can play podcasts and all sorts of media so well while I'm having to install third party apps (and thankfully there was one!) to play a podcast. The BB SDK's are killing app development and we're paying the price. Just this very morning I met with RIM to discuss upgrading our BES infrastructure to BES 5. Feeling pressure from my CIO I couldn't help but ask, what happens when there's another RIM outage? We can design and build all the HA we want into the design, but RIM goes down and it doesn't matter, does it? By summer this year I'll be looking at Android much more and also eyeing the next iphone (as much as I hate their closed platform and lack of "upgradeability" and serviceability). Talk about eating crow if I ever get an iphone, most of my friends will never let me live it down. - 01-06-2010, 02:20 PM #13
No matter how good the hardware is you will have people that like and others that hate it. Maybe a blackberry is not the type of phone you need?? You are comparing it to apple and to the droid.....And those 2 phone are made for different type of phone users. If I'm not mistaken RIM is the #1 selling device in North America so they most be doing something good. It's simple blackberry's are not for everyone, just like android and Iphone is not for everyone.
I am very happy with my 9700
It's makes and gets calls (never dropped one call), AMAZING for emails, best battery I ever had on a smart phone, It's not touch, Love the track pad.....
I had the iphone too...I used it for a pretty long time (maybe 6 to 8 months) and that phone was just not for me....So maybe this one is not for you.
- 01-06-2010, 02:21 PM #14
because it high profit margins add shareholder value. rim doesn't make anything but phones and telecom systems, so if they let those margins deteriorate you can expect to see their stock price plummet. google can afford to eat low margins on the nexus one because it's not their core business.
- 01-06-2010, 02:25 PM #15
RIM will not get better if they know their consumer base is satisfied with what they put out. I love my 9700 but RIM has to make a move here. I just don't understand why people wouldn't like to see more in a blackberry. Step it up RIM!

What's wrong with 3.2 mp camera?? If a person needs more then that they should get a real camera. It's a phone.... I do agree that somethings could get better " The Browser " but in general if they had you has a client since 1999 im sure there doing something good.... I doubt you would stick with a company for so long if it didn't meet your needs.

I work with a guy that just bought an iPhone about 8 weeks ago. I had begged him not to, now, he can't stop raving about it.
He can manage his ENTIRE Unix infratructure with it.
He can RDP to any Windows box effectively.
He can Telnet with ease.
Before, he used the ROVE products and the other RDP BB client which he says are pathetic compared to his iPhone abilities now.
I really forsaw him not liking his iPhone.
Didn't happen.
He absolutely loves it.
This is a 47 yr old tech guy that doesn't give a damn about texting, IM, or Media.
Sorry, I'm seeing an awakening here.
I personally HATE Apple. Always have. And I hate touchscreens.
But I'm beginning to wonder....
RIM can do better, admit it people. Just step down and admit it. - 01-06-2010, 02:51 PM #19
I have to agree with you on this. Touch screen was a pain in my @rss
I feel sorry for the Apple fan boys/girls. They look and sound like retarded kids who smile and drool at whatever Apple throws at them. Seriously, Fck Apple.
Let's hope RIM seriously consider giving us more powerful devices short coming future (speaking hardware wise)The perfect slave thinks he's free - 01-06-2010, 03:00 PM #20
Why compare a BB 9700 with the Google Nexus and iPhone 3GS?
I could have understood if someone wrote this over in the Storm2 forums comparing that device (so they can start thinking about what should be made available with Storm3). - 01-06-2010, 03:01 PM #21
I can't help you lazerus. I love my 9700. I will say if I didn't then I wouldn't own it. I suggest you buy the phone that works for you and stop worrying about who makes it.
- 01-06-2010, 03:07 PM #22
Negative negative? Or is it that you are just bored of your BB? Sounds more like the latter to me. I've also been a tech for over 10years. Never had a need to RDP from my phone!?? Why would I. I'm happy with VPN anytime I need from my BB to servers which has never been an issue.
And linux is and alwasy will be fantastic but it's depending on your infrastructure. That's cool that a tech can manage his Linux servers from his iPhone, however I highly doubt it manages the whole admin side *cough*. However, yup that sounds pretty neato.
I don't think most business users care that you can't use 100yr old protocol as Telnet...much less on their BB??? Come on now. :P
And hey, I don't hate apple...why would you?? I love their PC's for running recording programs like pro tools in my studio. Why you have to hate?
Me? Well I love and have used BB's for years, tried an iPhone for a while.....it's cool but not what I NEED.
I agree with the last guy saying about your weird complaint about the camera. If you want high end resolution pictures......ummm buy a dig cam then, that's why there is a market for one. :P
So...it's a matter of opinion....but no need to bark out useless comments about BB drawbacks where most people that use them for a specific need, are more than happy with. I think RIM is doing just fine.....go have a listen to the smartphone roundup podcasts Kevin put up and stop with the mindless banter.
Cheers.....oh and that's MY opinion.

apple computers are second to none... its not even a close race I have multiple pcs and a macbook pro 17 inch and the speed and non glitches of the apple computer far outweighs anything that pc has to offer sorry this is off topic of phones but I feel you talking down on apple as a whole is improper I am a IT guy im forced to use windows machines for work but thats why windows is good it keeps it guys working because it always breaks.. if the world was on apple alot of people would lose there jobs
