9700 with OS 6 ?
Hey Guys! I was just wondering if the 9700 ran OS 6 alright? I'm in the market for a used one. And my Curve 9300 runs it perfect, so I would think 9700 could run it alright too?

Running OS6 on Bold 9700
I tried it. I use Bold 9700 running on T-Mobile. It did not run properly, so slowly and hung constantly. OS6 is designed for a machine with 512 MB of room to operate (I forget the actual term), whereas the 9700 has 256 MB. OS6 took up 215 MB space, leaving little space to run anything else. I reinstalled OS5 and am awaiting BB10.

Look up BBoss and shrink out almost everything on the OS. I boot with 40mb free app storage and 80mb memory and OS6 runs flawless with all the apps I need. I couldn't go back to OS5 since I use universal search a of a lot.

Am using a 9700 and running O.S 6 but it looks like am killing myself not the fone because am always using the browser and I might be in the middle of an inportant mail and the browser shuts down on me.
I used to have 34mb space when using the lastest OS6 (.723) but installed Aarvark and got it up to 39mb but till experiencing the same problem even with maps and social feeds deleted.
Would like to understand you perfectly, did you mean you have 40mb + 80mb totalling 120mb of your 256mb left with an OS6 running on your 9700? - 07-02-2012, 09:45 AM #12
You're confusing 2 different types of memory.
The bold 9700 has a total of 3 types of memory.
There's the EEPROM (256MB)where the OS and Apps are installed.
There's RAM (256MB)which is the memory used to run the OS and currently running apps.
There's SD storage which stores photos, videos and app backups.
For comparison, my 9700 is sitting at 53MB EEPROM free and 90MB RAM free.
OS6 does not run perfectly, but it's usable as long as you stay away from the browser and any intensive apps. - 07-02-2012, 01:30 PM #13
OS 6 is hands down better than OS 5 ....once you change very difficult to change back...just like going to OS 7.1 and back.
I think shrinking OS helps ALOT, to be more daring try hybrid.via Web

I have to agree with you. Once you've got a hold on os6, it's hard to revert back to os5. Although I prefer the simplicity of os5, with smaller size of os, it is really hard to left the eye-candy standard theme of os6 plus its responsiveness (at least from my ends). To each its own.

Sorry my mistake for not clarifying. Yes 40MB of application memory which is separate from the 80MB of RAM I have as mike007 said. I used to have the worst memory leaks in the earlier OS6 builds for the 9700 but it has gradually stabilized and I can go through a good week before I run out of application memory and am forced to reboot. Search BB Boss on this forum, it will let you know what you should shrink out. I take out all languages, fonts, themes, ringtones etc. As for your browser issues I would strongly suggest using Opera Mini, it has never force closed on me.

OS6 on a Blackberry Bold 9700 will work great, much nicer experience then the OS5.
