Default Using data when connected to Wi-Fi?

I was wondering how data usage works when I am connected to a Wi-Fi network?

I know you can't just use Wi-Fi and must have a data plan to use anything, but if I am on Wi-Fi, does it use any of my data plan?

Just wondering since I am traveling out of the country and bought a limited data plan.

Thanks

If you are connected to WiFi, you will use that instead of your data. Try turning your network connection off, but leave WiFi on. That is a good example of how it works.

Alright, thank you. What has me confused, is apps like Gmail and Gtalk don't work just over WiFi. I turned off my network connection (Mobile Network), and they still worked. So is that using data? When I go to my mobile network options and turn off data completely, Wifi doesn't work.

When wifi is on the data is just going through wifi to the bis server... So you can't use up data like that... Its using wifi and wifi is unlimited so its all good

If you have mobile data turned off and Wifi turned on, you will use Wifi. If you have both of them on, Wifi will be prioritized for all things that can be sent over Wifi and the regular CDMA network will be used for things like calling and texting.

Sounds like you use the same setting as me.....

What I do when traveling abroad and I decide not to use international data through my carrier......
Go into Mobile Network
On the data services 'while roaming' line, set this to off. Do not set the first Data Service line to off as this will turn off all data (cell and wifi) like you mentioned

This will set you up to where you will only receive data when you are within range of your desired wifi network and will NOT use carrier data.

When I travel abroad and don't want to use my data plan I turn wifi on and then go to Manage Connections, Uncheck Mobile Network. This way you are sure that only wifi is being used and not the network. Under Mobile Network Options you need to make sure that Data Services is set to on. If you turn that off wifi won't work either. I do this all the time while abroad. You should have no issues.

Safe travels.
