Two problems with my 9650
Hi,
I've just got my new Bold 9650 (well, I think it is refurbished as I got it on ebay but it works and looks grade A and for a great deal, I'm not complaining!) But I have two small problems.
The first is that I updated the phone right away to the latest OS6 I could get in the desktop manager but I find the phone very slow. I am considering going back to OS5. Is this common with this phone?
Second, the trackpad looked like it had some coating that was chipped in the corner ever so lightly. I hated the feeling over the smooth to rough and the look was really bad so with a little bit of thumb - it has all chipped off. Now I wonder if that was a good thing to do or not! The trackpad is slightly scratched which I can't see why it would be a problem and it still works. But would there be any point in buying some plastic polish and gently using that on the trackpad? Although it works perfectly now, I worry that with time it will stop working.
Thank you for your time

I can only answer the second one. My trackpad (used 9650) is the same way. I am just going to leave it be, for fear that it may stop working, or not work as well if I mess with it.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I can only see the scratches in bright light but I would rather it is scratch free! The only good thing with the chipped plastic all gone is that it feels much better. Is yours scratched or chipped?

I never looked back after switching to do OS 6. Give it a few days to settle in. You could always try a hybrid if you want to push for performance.

I use a Bold 9650 and I can say that OS 6 is always a compromise, irrespective of the hybrid that you are using. I have tried several OS 6 hybrids on this device, and while I love the interface, the phone is sluggish. I would recommend finding an OS 5 hybrid or try running 5.0.0.975 on this device, as the device works amazing on OS 5
That snappy, durable, reliable, solid thing is present on OS 5 on the Bold 9650. No OS 7 device has been able to have the same snappiness, if you get me. Personally I'm using a OS BB's .707 V3 hybrid, OS 6. I am thinking of downgrading as I get a bad discharge rate (8% per hour average)... So yeah.. I want the best hybrid in terms of battery life but am yet to find a good one. I saw people on forums replying with 3% average discharge rates so I'm confused.. Any suggestions? Oh and I use BBM and MSN A LOT, and text like crazy too x_x - 08-13-2012, 11:15 AM #6
5.0.0.975 here, and the above post is correct. Snappy, responsive, and stable. Best version of OS 5 available for this phone. I tried 6, and it just lagged. Went back to 5. It is a compromise I guess. Older devices just aren't meant to run the newer OS's. Just because it can, doesn't mean that it should.

You helped me out when I didn't know how to fix my Berry's OS. Thanks. Um yeah so I wanted to ask, what's are your minimum, maximum and average discharge rates, respectively? I really want to go back on 5.0.0.975 but I want an UPDATED OS 5 hybrid, if you get me. The OS was released ages ago and could be significantly improved (I believe). The problem is no one makes OS 5 hybrids anymore
And, 8% per hour isn't good enough for me. I love typing on my Blackberry; BBM and MSN work flawlessly on this. It's better on OS 5 though the OS 6&7 icons, and a theme on OS 5 just doesn't do it for me. I just wish a new device could be released, which had amazing specs and all, no open tray or maximise panel crap for the snappiness, but had the latest icons instead of the OS 5 ones. It would be less resource consuming, would get an amazing discharge rate if done properly... I wish they could just make something like a powerful and upgrade 9650 or 9700 (same design), and keep that durability and maintain the BlackBerry's "solidness".
Anyways, how can I get this device to max performance? I ordered a new housing.. And I was hoping you (Heavy Fluid) could guide me on the best 9650 hybrid for battery life... Other than that, living in the UK, where can I find a genuine 9650 battery? I bought one (Chinese) and I think that might be the reason the discharge rate is so high.
Sorry for the long reply, hoped this helped, and thanks in advance xD

To be honest, I don't know anything about hybrids. I have only run full releases of the OS. I also don't know anything about my battery discharge rate. I purchased a new battery for mine from Amazon for like $5, and it seems to be authentic, and works exceptionally well. I am getting more than a days use out of mine, and I am a fairly heavy texter.
I am with you on the hopes of a new device like you mentioned. I did the next best thing, and made my own theme with the OS 7 icons, and tweaked it to my specifications. I am very happy with the performance of the 9650, at least for my needs.
I wish that I could help you more with what you asked about.Current device: White Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB

I am just in the process of putting OS5 on my 9650. I like OS6, but it just doesn't perform well enough for my liking. It reminds me of my Curve 9300 - slow, sluggish, and just not the same experience as on the Torch 9800 or Bold 9780.
I like OS5 too, just a shame the browser can't be updated!
Regarding the trackpad, it is slightly scratched and I'd love to fix this. Can anyone recommend a solution to use? I thought a plastic polish but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?!
Thank you. - 08-14-2012, 03:26 AM #10

On my old 9650 the trackpad "coating" came off after about 5 months. It didn't cause any issues and mine never scratched. I only used the barely there case by casemate. So the trackpad wasn't protected. When I sold mine after 1.5 years of use, I didn't have any cosmetic issues.
