Question for the forum?
Can you put OS 6 on a Verizon bold 9650? Also, should I wait to do an upgrade for a few months or pull the trigger now? My phone is functional but outdated as it runs 4.5 OS
- 01-13-2011, 07:42 AM #2
Yes you can put the 6 OS on a 9650, Sprint is already using this OS on their 9650 model. As to upgrading, it would depend on who you carrier is and what you seek out of a phone?

Yes, you can put BlackBerry 6 on a Verizon Bold 9650, however Verizon has not released their authorized build of BB 6, so you would have to load a different release, like the one that Sprint recently released.
Do you currently own a Bold 9650, or are you thinking of upgrading to one? You're saying that your phone is functional, but outdated as it runs 4.5, but you don't mention what device you currently have. Curve 8330?
Unless you're holding out for a possible release of the Storm 3, you wouldn't be making any mistake by upgrading to the 9650. It's a fine device indeed, currently the top of the line on VZW.

your post is a little confusing. You said you have a Bold 9650 (VzW) but your running OS4.5? On your Bold, go into Options>About and it will show your current OS there.
As for putting OS6 on your Bold9650, yes you can. There are leak versions avail and a Official Sprint release avail. You can find them in the Bold 9650 Forum. If you do decide to load one up, make sure you delete the vendor.xml files before installing on your Verizon blackberry.*life is just a beach, I'm just playin' in the sand....you know you at the top when only Heaven's right above it*

Sorry for the confusion
I have a Curve 8330 and have been eligible for an upgrade for 2.5 years but kept waiting for the latest and greatest.
I was questioning whether I should upgrade to the 9650 on Verizon or wait till the next blackberry comes out.
Another debate I've had is whether to go to the Droid X or stay with Berry. I mainly use phones for E-Mail and Text Msg, the only thing I like better about the Droid is surfing the internet.
Also, does the 5.0 OS and above have threaded text msging? Since I have such an old phone, I'm not sure I'm comparing apples to apples when comparing my blackberry to a Droid phone.
Love my blackberry though. Any input on pros and cons would be greatly appreciated because I can't make a decision. - 01-13-2011, 08:49 AM #7
Based on what you want to use it for you will not be disapointed with the 9650.
OS5 and OS6 both have threaded text messaging. - 01-13-2011, 08:51 AM #8
ahhh that explains the 4.5OS. I actually came from a Curve to the Bold in Dec. I looooove it! I was on the fence when my upgrade became avail in Sept to go droid or not. I made a list of pros/cons of what I NEEDED out of my device. By Oct-Nov I decided to stay bb. Yes surfing on a droid is faster, but its not one of my priorities. Mine, like yourself, was messaging. Bbm. Auto text(droid doesn't have this). and a few more I can't think of off the top of my head right now.
Yes the OS5 has threaded msging-its is much neater, cleaner looking when you open the folder. More organized
I love my Bold and glad I didn't wait any longer. I was going to wait and see what was coming out after the new year, but I really liked the Bold after checking it out in a VzW store in Dec. and decided not to wait for something new. But that works for ME. You'll have to decided what you want & what will work for you
Good luck

You can certainly wait for the next BB to come out, seems as you have been doing that for a long time so it obviously works for you. If you are going to wait, then what you need to wait for is a device that runs QNX and is LTE ready. Could happen late this year or next, who would know.
As for what is out there now, the Bold 9650 is the premier CDMA Blackberry currently available. It's a great device and runs very smoothly and very fast with BB6. Granted the browser is not there yet but is getting better as far as speed and page rendering is concerned. Still needs more work and I believe that will come.
I for one don't like all touch screen devices and also don't like the side slideout keyboards so the Bold fits my likes and my needs very well.
I don't think we can give you much more information than that which has been given already, it is up to you now. Make a decision as to staying with your Curve or taking the plunge and getting a Bold.Bob

I came to the Bold 9650 from an 8330. I still miss that phone.
Except it doesn't have double the memory, wi-fi, higher screen resolution, the ability to play video consistently, better music player, tabbed browsing and a hundred other features that my Bold on OS6 does.
Think about what you're missing.

The Bold 9650 is a superior device. BB 6 runs great and is very fast.

Thanks anyway pc. I can't believe I missed that. I'm not suprised as a devices life span is about one year before it is EOL (most of the time anyway).
- 01-13-2011, 04:53 PM #24
I can understand the S2 being EOL because that was released in Oct-09, but wasn't the Bold 9650 (vzw) released just this June 2010?
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com - 01-13-2011, 04:58 PM #25
That isn't all that uncommon. Look at the 9630, it was EOL soon after release as well.
It's hard to say, but it could mean there are newer devices coming out soon to replace them. By soon, I mean with in six months.
