Default no carrier (wi-fi only)---still have e-mail and instant messaging?

I have a Blackberry Bold 9650, OS 6 (from Verizon but no longer has data plan with Verizon); only Internet connection is wi-fi. I can still connect to the Internet fine but: can e-mail and instant messaging still work?
More specifically:
1. When I click on Setup: E-mail, it results in this:
"Your device had a problem connecting to the server." Only options are Retry and Cancel.

I removed and reinserted the SIM card and did a battery pull. Attempted to set up E-mail again---same results.

2. In going to Setup: Instant Messaging, it yields this message: "Select the instant messaging application you want to set up." only option: return to Setup.

Also, I am new to these forums, so if anyone has any information on how to find categories of the thousands of posts and responses (besides a key word search) that would be good to know.

The device needs to be on an active BlackBerry Data Plan in order for you to setup email and use instant messaging.

You could use the providers website to still use it for email. You will not have push email, as that requires a BlackBerry data plan, as mentioned above.

I only use wi-fi for internet on my 9650 and do not have any sort of data plan. You often can't use the native Blackberry apps, but there are alternatives to retain functionality.

For email I use Logic Mail, configured as IMAP, with my two email accounts. I would recommend the beta 2.1 as the notifications and automatic opening is much more useful than 2.0, not to mention I've never experienced any issues with it being in beta. LogicMail for BlackBerry

What kind of instant messaging? You can still use Google Voice, Facebook, Nimbuzz (a client for a lot of messengers) and a whole host of others. As I live abroad and often communicate with various countries in NA, Europe, and Africa, I have found Jaxtr SMS a great way to send free SMS to any number around the world over wifi.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how little is gained by having a data plan as long as you have steady access to wi-fi. The only thing I can't do, or find a viable workaround to, is BBM. Other than that, you can easily make it work and still have access to a vast majority of features.

Cheers,

Andrew

IIRC, the FB app requires the dataplan. To use FB without it, you have to go to the FB mobile site via the browser.

That's a big IF, cause I don't know anyone whose address is a Starbucks or an airport. lol
Wi-fi all the time is not a possibility for a lot of people. Hence, a data plan is necessary.
Personally, the time I spend away from work (wi-fi enabled ) and home (wi-fi enabled) is called life and I like having my phone with me. To do that, I have to have a data plan. :-)

This is not true. You can use it over wi-fi no problem, I do it daily.

Fair enough. However, data plans, let alone Starbucks, aren't always available when you live in Africa ha.

Just reiterating, if you aren't a heavy user and can stand to be "disconnected" when you don't have wi-fi, or don't want to spend then money, then you can retain most functionality without BIS/Data Plan. Trust me, I used BBs w/BIS in the states for 3 years and now, out of circumstance, I have no problem without it.

Last time I checked, you need a data plan to RIM native apps.

I'm going with the consensus of long time/knowledgeable members on this one. Sorry.

You're entitled to think what you want. I'm not speculating and have no reason to lie, just merely stating that I use it everyday over with just wi-fi. Luckily you don't even have to be sorry since nothing in this thread pertains to you.

OP, all the apps I mentioned in my first post do definitely work w/o data. Take it for what its worth in deciding how to use your Bold.

You use the Facebook app, or the mobile site?

The app. Apparently you have been able to use it w/o BIS, on wi-fi, since 2.0.

LOL cool story, kid. You might want to learn how things work around here. I can post in any thread I want. You're dismissed.

Now you know what I mean about what happens to the forums once a device goes EOL. The post quality diminishes significantly.

You need BIS, without a Blackberry data plan you can't use BBM / Email.

I could still use my wifi without the Blackberry data plan being active until now...
