GMail help!

I have installed the GMail icon on my BB and it works perfectly. The 'star' appears on the icon along with the 'envelope' at the top of the screen indicating I have a message. My problem is that there is also a 'messages' icon that receives a star along with the message. When I read and delete the message thru the GMail icon, the message envelope still appears at the top indicating I have an unread message and the 'message' icon still shows the star along with the message contained in the envelope. How can I get rid of the 'messages' envelope on my screen. I have tried to 'hide' the icon but the small envelope still appears at the top of my screen after I have read the message thru the GMail icon. I wind up viewing the message thru the GMail icon and the messages icon both in order to get rid of the little envelope at the top of the screen Any help appreciated.
