Verizon Blackberry unlocking
First of all your Blackberry should be unlocked to use SIM cards from carriers other then the original branded carrier of your Blackberry handset.
You can find out if your Blackberry is unlocked by going into the advanced settings / options of the device and selecting the SIM card options screen, then typing MEPD will bring up a screen where you can see all the securities of the SIM card on your Blackberry device.
Next to each security name (per line) you will notice the status of it... (Active / Disabled).
If all the lines on there are with the "disabled" status then the Blackberry device you are holding is unlocked (SIM free) and can be used with other GSM sim cards. if any of the lines is "Active" then you need to unlock that Blackberry handset to use it with other SIM cards.
Unlocking Blackberry devices is done by removing the SIM lock security set on the phone, moistly the "Network" security (MEP2) will be the one that is active and it can be unlocked by using the MEP2 unlock code (typing MEP[alt]2 and inserting the unlock code).
Verizon is a CDMA carrier and as default setting the phone is set to be used as a CDMA device and not as a GSM Blackberry device, first thing you need to unlock it to make it SIM free, after you got it done you need to set the Blackberry device which you got from Verizon into a GSM mode, go to the mobile network settings and select it to be used as a GSM device.
The last thing is the CDMA engineering screen which you can go into by dialing ##000000 from any Verizon Blackberry device.
On that screen you will have the CDMA phone number (the old Verizon phone number) set in there, you need to change that phone number to the number which is used now (the phone number of your SIM card). after you get it done the device will restart and you can now use your unlocked Verizon Blackberry with other GSM carrier by switching SIM cards.
