Default Blackberry Bold 9650 Ear Speaker Problem

Hi, I recently bought a used blackberry and the sound quality coming from the ear speaker is a little bit scratchy. Whenever I make a call, it's not as clear. I tried to google a cheap ear speaker replacement, but can't seem to find any. I need help please and thank you.

Daniel,
Hard to say what to do in this case. I would be inclined to call CS and ask them to replace the whole phone as I don't feel comfortable opening up the dang thing to take a look. Maybe someone else here will advise you otherwise. Hardware problems tho, I would call my carrier and ask tech support if they could send you another phone.

Just my opinion.

I don't know that CS would replace a used device bought from an outside source.

What OS is on the device? you could try changing the radio file to see if that makes any difference.

You're absolutely correct. They more than likely will not replace a used device. I missed that entirely. Must be before I had my tea this morning!

Perhaps there was a little "gun and tonic" in your tea?

Yes, but which OS6? I have 6.0.0.587, and the sound quality of calls isn't the same as when I was running 6.0.0.600. You can find out which version you have by going in to

Options > Device > About Device Versions

6.0 Bundle zzzz (v6.0.0.xxx)

Change the radio file by upgrading or downgrading your OS, that's the best way to swap sfi files. You can make a hybrid but you still have to reload to OS to change the sfi file on the device.

My phone says it's on the OS 6.0.0.587. I'll just see if replacing the ear speaker would change anything. Do you know where i can order one?

My 9650 has similar trouble. I'm running the same OS as you. I never thought to try a different OS because I assumed the speaker was going bad.

One solution (kinda) is to go into the phone app by pressing the send key. Then open the menu and select options > in call settings and scroll down to phone call audio and set it to "boost treble".

It isn't a perfect solution but it helps.

That was my next suggestion, check the audio boost. I think 6.0.0.600 had better call quality, but the OS overall sucks.

Sorry, can't help you there. There are videos on youtube related to taking blackberries apart. Not something I'd ever do.
