| | what to get, bold or tour?
sorry guys, i dont know if somebody has post with the same topic before..
i am actually getting a bb for my dad's bday..
but i am not sure what to get for him..
i myself have been using bold for nearly year n half... and i have nothing to complain about it..
the problem is, if i get him a bold right now, it is already a bit outdated, as a lot of new bb has came up...
or should i get him tour? but is it as good as bold?
thanks before .. |

The Tour is basically just like a Bold except it has a bigger on board memory and a better camera. It's smaller then the Bold and it has a slightly better screen then the Bold.
The Bold isn't close to being outdated since RIM hasn't really put a phone out that is far beyond the technology of the Bold. I think this is also dependent on what service your dad has. If Verizon, go for the Tour, if ATT, go fo Bold. You can also wait for the Onyx but I don't know when that'll be out. If you're really worried about the new blackberry coming out then wait for the Onyx.

ok first there have only been a few new BB's since BOld release almost a year ago. nothing has been better only on same level tour 8900 and storm are all new gen devices but nothing better.
Is he on VZW or Sprint or AT&T? if hes on AT&T then bold or 8900 all the way
since tour's 3g wont work on gsm and has no wifi.
if hes on a cdma carrier go tour!

It has been covered before but there are variables and the situation is different for everyone.
I need more info. Is he on ATT or verizon? If ATT is he in a 3G region? Is jumping carriers a possibility?
Remember that a phone is the girl you date, but the carrier is wife you go home to.

Switch him to AT&T and get the Bold. Upgrade the OS to 4.6.0.297.

The Bold is more device than the Tour. The Tour is more comparable to the 8900. Bold has faster processor and WiFi just for starters.

Don't speak to fast unless you've toyed with a Tour. I have and I was rather impressed with the speed of the Tour as compared to my Bold! Sure there are pros and cons for both device,...but the question is which device fits your Dad best.
For starters, the Tour is smaller,...but you knew that already,...therefore the Bold is larger (you knew that too), but if your Dad has larger hands, he'll surely appreciate the keyboard of the Bold a lot more over the Tour. If he hates large and bulky devices,...he'll no doubt appreciate the Tour more.
As for speed running through apps,...the Tour with it's 256mb of obd memory (though slower processor) runs neck and neck with the Bold,...trust me, I know as I did an instore App access test btwn the two. Both are world class devices,...and once he goes BB, there is no going back!

No actually the slightly faster processor and Wifi is covering just about everything. Trust me I LOVE the Bold but the Tour will run neck and neck with it. IMO, unless you are a heavy wifi user then Tour is a better device. However if you do rely on wifi than I'd say it's an even match.

the tour is not as fast as the Bold...end of story...no matter how you try to spin it....your best bet is talking up the Tour's better camera and more application memory and not even mentioning speed or wiFi
624>>> 528 MHZ
lets review..the bold can do EVERYTHING the tour can only faster
and you would have us believe that WiFi on the Bold brings it up to par with the Tour?
can i have some of what you're drinking?

Wow apparently someone got their feelings hurt. I have had plenty of time with both devices(outside of an AT&T or VZW store) to know the Tour does EVERYTHING the Bold does JUST as fast AND has more app memory and the 3.2 camera. I do like the larger physical screen and the Bold also seems to be a bit more sturdy, but IMHO the Tour is the better device.(and yes I CHOOSE to own a Tour I could have either one) You can cry all day about your Bold being faster but the fact is it's just not true.

can i have some of what you're drinking? | I very much agree. My brother just recently got a Tour and I've had a Bold for months now.
For comparison think of it like this:
RIM=GM
Camero=Tour
Corvette=Bold
Both are very nice, fast, and good looking cars. But, the Camero will never outrun the Vette.
The Bold's processor blows the Tour outta the water. When changing themes or bringing up different apps the difference is very noticeable. I've had a chance to play with both for weeks now, not just a few minutes in the store. Numbers don't lie:
Bold - 624-Mhz
Tour - 528-MHz
The screen on the Tour also doesn't compare. The Bold's screen looks almost HD and the Tour, while it looks good, still isn't as crisp as the Bold's is.
Is the Tour a bad phone? No, not by any means. Except maybe the whole trackball thing going on now. Lots of Tours have been sold with bad trackballs. My Bro's was one of them. I would hold off on buying a Tour right now, unless you're going for the Bold. The app memory and camera on the Tour are better, but that's about it.

I have compared both phones in large airports and major cities and my findings are different. Blows the tour out of the water huh? Comical. I have actually watched the Tour outperform the Bold on several occasions.
The trackball issue has pretty much been resolved, that was the initial batch of Tours. Quote: |

| Unfortunetly a comment like this really makes me question the integrity of your entire post. The tour has a HIGHER screen resolution than the Bold. The Bold has a larger screen but the Tour definitely has better quality.

The trackball issue resolved? Hardly Tell that to everyone in Tour forums:
I've heard of members on here that have had 6 Tours, before getting a "good" one. http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/wr...thread-303979/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/to...-cause-296273/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/verizon-303959/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/re...better-303790/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/ju...t-tour-296634/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/sc...ll-fix-269115/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/of...thread-301402/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/ne...issues-303875/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/wh...t-tour-303837/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/sa...ur-now-303558/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/ne...better-303556/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/di...l-feel-303696/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/fi...g-well-261266/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/to...t-here-265171/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/br...en-dot-303687/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/gr...estion-303632/ http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/ne...-issue-303425/

I held out getting the Tour until there were today themes and was hoping to wait it out a few months so any production issues were resolved. So last week I went to bestbuy to get my first tour. After 24 hours, I immediately noticed a problem with the trackball (and battery cover) so I swapped it for a new one which seemed to work as designed.
I have been using the new one for a week now and have the following observations to make:
Build - The tour feels much sleeker and looks much cooler. I find it a bit heavier and it doesn't give me the impression that it is as durable/rugged. It is extremely slippery and fingerprint prone though part of that would be resolved when my Verizon door arrives that I ordered on ebay.
Battery Life - My impression is that it is sllghtly worse than the curve. Maybe that is because of the REVA modem or the better screen.
Screen - No doubt the screen is much nicer and sharper. However, that also means many things are much smaller. None of the today themes has fonts that are big enough IMHO.
OS Speed - Everyone is saying the speed is so much better. I am simply not noticing it.
Internet Speed - I know that REVA is better than REV0 but I am simply not noticing a speed increase.
Keyboard - It's different and I can get used to it if needed but I personally like the curve's KB better. Laptopmag agrees. I found pressing the keys on the tour were quieter but the trackball was louder to click.
App Memory - No brainer. I have to worry about the apps I install on the Curve but can go crazy on the Tour. But I have reached a happy compromise on my curve and there isn't really anything that compelling that I need to put on my curve that I can't.
Future-proof - Clearly the curve will be abandoned as it is replaced with newer models. I doubt I will see as much software updates, if any, on the curve. That worries me.
Profiles - the implementation on the tour is terrible IMHO. Even the threads here say that it will be "corrected" and back like the curve's in the next OS release.
Reboots - Takes 5-7 minutes vs. 3 minutes on my curve. When needed on the road, 7 minutes without a phone is way too long.
Vibrate - much weaker on the Tour. Is a strong curve even necessary? I like it better.
Signal strength - seems much worse on the tour. My curve (and my wifes) always had more bars than the tour.
The GPS doesn't yet work with Google Maps. I am sure that will be fixed soon.
Also, as my wife uses a curve and I have many accessories with the same USB plug, I will now have different ones. But, I ordered some adapters for $1/each from ebay so that is less of a problem.
So, all in all, I am a bit conflicted as I want the newest gadget that will be updated but I think I should wait a little while longer. When the profiles, Google/GPS and maybe better Today themes are available (as well as a new batch of devices where it isn't a crap-shoot if you get a good one), I will consider it again. If that is when the new Tour comes out with Wifi, even better.
I haven't given it back yet but did switch back to the curve for now. Does anyone want to convince me that I am making a mistake? |
