bes and bis are just the type of email you can recieve. Basically it is a differnt amoutn of money a month for each plan, bes is the $30.00 blackberry plan and allows you to get personal email and bis is the corporate email and is $45.00 a month! Hope that helps you out a little.

BES is an acronym for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It's used by businesses to manage and control the BlackBerry devices. If your BlackBerry was provided by your employer, you're almost certainly a BES User.

BIS is an acronym for BlackBerry Internet Service. It's used by private individuals who own their own BlackBerry devices.

Lecture Two in the BlackBerry 101 Lecture Series covers BES and BIS and the differences between the two.

Service Books are the means by which your carrier enables various carrier-controlled capabilities on your phone. Service Books are pushed to your phone by your carrier. If you're having problems receiving emails or texts, you can log onto your carrier's site and push the Service Books to yourself. This will often restore function.

So when I buy my Bold from AT&T, and when I get home and turn it on, do I need to send service books?

They should be pushed to your device automatically upon boot up.

No, that's not necessary. Check the BlackBerry 101 Lecture #2 that I cited.

No. The carrier pushes them to you. You don't send them to the carrier. And as stated by someone else, they should have all been pushed when your phone was activated. So you should not have to deal with them initially.

Jeff, I was just kidding, I know the difference, and your response was spot on.
    Have a good one!

Folk are making things a little too complicate

If you are to a business (company) servicer then you will likely use BES (you will know if you are if your company says so)

If you are ordinary folk without business connection then you use BIS

When you go to ATT web login you will be setting up your email on the Blackberry email section of the website. After you set up the email there will be a clicker button that says 'send service books'. If all goes well there will be a confirmation on the phone that tells you that the service books were sent and the account in effect. You should be able to use the email account within 20 minutes.

They might not have been pushed when the phone was activated. Once i got both of my berries from verizon they 'forgot' to do that and i had to once i got home. No big deal, but none the less the store didnt do it for me. Just make sure to ask them at the store.
