unable to adjust volume when playing media files

I acquired another blackberry 9000, OS 5. I am unable to adust the volume level when playing media files and there is no volume icon showing. If I make a phone call, however, the side volume key does work and the icon appears if I adjust the volume up or down.
I have another blackberry 9000, OS 4.6, and don't have this problem. The audio icon shows up when playing media files and the volume can be adjusted. Can someone tell me how to fix the audio so I can raise or lower the volume. I've tried everything I can think of but can't fix it.

You mean when you press the up or down volume nothing happens?

There is no icon showing in 5.0 when playing media files. The volume slide bar appears when you press one of the buttons.

What is "everything I can think of"?

You just have to hit the volume key at the right pressure. Somehow it works for me the whole times. lol.
