i currently have the 9700 but previously had the 8520 and before that the 9000, i am going to be buying a new bb this week and want to know whether to buy the 9900 or go back to the 9000 as it has been my favourite so far.

The 9000 is a great device, the best of its day, but it is now akin to a classic car, like a '57 Cadillac. It'll get you where you need to go, and look darned good doing it.
The 9900, however, is like a new Mustang GT500. Awesome performance, great looks, one of the best things on the road.

If you want nostalgia, drive the 9000 on the weekends, but get the 9900 for your daily driver.

You said it in my style, seems you too are a petrohead as me. About the BlackBerry thing I would completely agree go for the 9900 it's cool.

One additional and very important reason: the trackball on that 9000 WILL go bad, eventually, and probably sooner rather than later. It's a known mechanical point of failure that has a limited lifespan. The 9900 trackpad is much more reliable, and the touchscreen means you'll always be able to operate your device should you experience a rare trackpad failure. Redundant controls FTW.

@mobibiz: I'm a computer/phone guy, but a petrohead wannabe. I love and appreciate cars, and can do intermediate work on them, but I leave the complicated stuff to my gearhead friends. I fix their computers, they fix my car.
