Default Quiet ringtone on 9000 after upgrade to 5.0

Just to say, I have searched but can't seem to find any answers to this following issue.

I have a Bold 9000, and for some reason the SMS message tone, and my ringtone have suddenly gone very quiet.

I upgraded to 5.0 a while ago, and everything was ok, then a couple of days ago the volume went very low, even though it is turned upto 10 in the settings.

I'll have another look about and see if I can find some answers, but in the meantime if anyone can post some fixes I'll be over the moon,

Cheers.

Well after doing some more searching, I have downgraded to .681 from .822 as there seems to be quite a few members that have had issues with sound problems with .822, but I can't ascertain if there are any differences.

Looks like I'll just have to keep my ears open a bit more,

Shaun.

Yes, again, this is an OS bug with .822. The best bet is to stick with .681.

Cheers for your reply Matt.

The strange thing is, when I first upgraded to .822 the sound was fine, then it just went really quiet a few days ago, I have now went back to .681 but it doesn't seem to have fixed the sound issue as the ringtone, and SMS tone are still very low.

I think I may just go back to a 4.6 OS to see if that makes any difference, then upgrade again to .681.

Fingers crossed that might get things back to a reasonable level once more.

The sound profiles with .822 work for a few days, then just go quiet. There has been no solution to it that I am aware of, except a battery pull (which is no solution).

I would suggest that .681 is the best bet until something replaces .822.

Good luck!

Does the "remove the battery cover and press down at the camera lens" trick make a difference?

Well after downgrading to 4.6, with no difference to the volume, I tried 5.0.0.592, again no volume gains, so I have now went back to .681 as this seems to be the most stable of all the 5.0 O.S files.

To techjunkieforlife,

What does the "remove the battery cover and press down at the camera lens" thing do?

It's not the upgrade. It's a defect in the phone. They took mine back and replaced it, acknowledging that there was a problem. I could get sound out of the phone I returned if I pressed on the back of the camera inside the case. The phone they sent me is a different story. If I take the case off, the sound works. It's a design flaw that RIM won't admit to. I suggest contacting them directly at CSOCustomerLoyalty@blackberry.com.

With the latest upgrade, there is an issue with assigning ring tones. If I leave everything on the ATT sound, it works. As soon as I change it to a different ring tone, the sound fails. However, my speakerphone still works thoughout. With the defect, the speakerphone doesn't work, along with all the other sounds because it's a speaker issue, not a system issue.

I hope this helps.

I have never had any sound issues or profile problems with my 9000 until I upgraded to OS 5.0.0.822. Possibly there was a bad batch of 9000's with the issue you're describing. In terms of the sound issue with the OS upgrade, lots of others reported this too and it indeed appears to be an OS bug. In my experience, after doing battery pulls at least once a day (mostly for the usual lack of memory issue), I have not noticed the sound issues come back (maybe it's because I'm rebooting at least once a day).

what I actually found was that whenever I tried to load a custom ringtone, it would work, but when I tried to load a stock ringtone - no sound. Kinda opposite from yours, no?

Regards,
Pete

At the moment I'm using a sampled piece of an mp3 track for my ringtone, and it was fine when I first put it on my handset, using 4.6 O.S., then I upgraded to 5.0.0.822, and again, no problem, in fact, the sound was very loud.

Now all of a sudden the volume of ALL ringtones, and text tones too has gone very low compared to what it used to be.

It just seems a bit strange that for no reason the phone has decided to start limiting the volume.

I never bought the handset new so I don't think that returning it will be an option I can use, so it looks like I may just have to endure until another "fix" comes along.

Thanks to all you guys who have sent posts.

I had a BB Bold 9000 since December 2008. I had no issues with the ringtones untill I upgraded the OS to 5.0.0.822. I'm having the same sound issues. At first, I thought the phone went bad, so, with the insurance, I bought a "new" phone/BB Bold 9000 for $125. Upgraded the phone to 5....822, and within a few days, same issue. Now, I'm on my third "new" BB Bold 9000, and I'm thinking, this can't be the phone. It has to be someone else. So right now, as I write this, I'm on the phone with ATT and they're researching something with Blackberry.

I went on the Blackberry site itself, and the lowest I can downgrade to is 4.6.0.304, Bundle 519, Platform 4.0.0.247. So, I think that's what I'll have to do and go from there. They don't have 5.....681

I wish I had looked here first, cause it would have saved me $125, when really, there was nothing wrong with my phone in the first place.

Stakie, you can upgrade to a 5.0 OS that is not an AT&T official release. Many carriers worldwide have released other 5.0 OS's for the Bold (5.0.0.681 and 5.0.0.771 are 2 of the best releases).

Just follow the steps to install in the respective threads (which can be found on this forum by searching for either of those OS releases.

I had the same problem with my first 9000. Turned out that something on the main board was fried and it had to be replaced. (per AT&T)

I know this doesn't help, but it may give you an idea to use vibrate a lot..

Interesting...I just got my 9000 on an eBay deal. Got it all set-up....removed the IT profile from prior owner (couldn't disable password)...and updated the OS to latest...no ring tone or alerts!!!!

Speaker working fine (can play ring tones from media file)...so after reading this thread I pulled the battery, rebooted..and Voila !!! sounds are back to normal????
We'll see if they disappear again, then I'll try the downgrade option....just weird....

Thanks for all the good info on this forum.

The latest OS for the Bold 5.0.0.822 has known problems with the ringtones not working. Perform a battery pull and you are good again for a while, but the problem will continue to happen from time to time. RIM knows of the problem, but I really doubt there will be a fix since the Bold 9000 is out-dated according to them. *sigh*
