Default Question when trying to remove BES software on mac

Hi, I know this topic has been gone over time and time again, but I've got a question regarding removing the enterprise software from my Bold 9000...

...Backstory, I didn't steal it. My dad gave me two of his old Bold 9000's. They were both work phones. One had a bad keyboard, the other had a bad connection to the battery. Swapped the motherboards, so now I've got a perfectly working Bold 9000, only it's got the damn IT Policy on it.

I've already found the guide on "How to Disable/Remove Password on Blackberry Cell Phones" (unfortunately, I can't post the link because this is my first post...but hopefully you guys know the one I'm talking about). I've got the desktop software installed, the problem is when I get to step 2.

You see, I have a Mac. And it's very different from a Windows machine. And those instructions are very windows-specific.

Has anybody had experience going through these steps on a Mac before? Should I abandon ship, borrow my parent's PC, and do it from there? Is there a handy, Mac-oriented tutorial I've managed to miss?

Thanks!

You need to get access to a computer running Windows and remove the IT Policy that way.

As a loyal Mac user for computer work at home I feel your pain. Abandon ship for chores like this one. Find a PC and follow the instructions. Mac and BB are not so friendly as we might like.

Have you tried:

"Remove the IT policy by using BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.1 for Mac.

Important: This method can only be used on BlackBerry smartphones that are running BlackBerry Device Software 4.3 to 6.0.

Warning: This procedure deletes all data on the BlackBerry smartphone. Back up the data before performing this procedure. For more information on how to back up data, see KB18776.

Close the BlackBerry Desktop Software, if it is open.
On the Mac computer, open Terminal.
Type cd /Applications/BlackBerry\ Desktop\ Software.app/Contents/MacOS/ and press ENTER.
Type ./bbdm resettofactory
Note: If the smartphone has a password, type the following command:

./bbdm -password <password> resettofactory

Note: <password> should be replaced with the password for the BlackBerry smartphone."

A number of MAC/BB users have dual boot systems to handle chores like this and a few others.

A dual boot system with Win7 in a BootCamp partition is easier overall than this method. Both work but the Win7 adds function to apps like BBSAK and BBHTools among others. On my Mac the partition is pretty small and used just for BB purposes.

I just used my dad's computer...

So I installed BB desktop software, it had an update. Connected the phone, it updated. I downloaded the policy.bin file, dumped it in C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Desktop\, wiped the Blackberry, edited the registry with the new string value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\Blackberry\Manager\, started the BB desktop software, and connected the Bold 9000. That's all the steps. The Bold's running the latest software now, but there's still reference to IT Policy and encryption software in the security settings.

I reinstalled the facebook application, as a test. It lets me access the facebook app now, but it still requires the device password to do absolutely anything (and any time I want to unlock the device).

Am I missing some crucial step to completely wipe the device of encryption software?

Did you do the policy.bin at the same time as the update or after? Where did you get the file?

I got the file from

http :// support.gsmliberty.net / index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticl eid=21

(had to break it up...forums still won't let me post links). Those are also the instructions I used. I did steps 1 and 2, didn't have the wipe option so installed the latest software (first part of step 3). Though I didn't quite get the "open the Desktop Manager, select Application Loader, and follow the prompts." part. There's nothing labeled "Application Loader", no prompts to follow. The device updated with the latest software, and now all the desktop software is really good for is syncing.

try this one:

Remove an I.T. Policy from a BlackBerry...

It's the one I used a while back to clean mine.

YES!

So the link posted by saudadeii was essentially the same instructions, just copied into a thread. However, I read a few pages of the thread, and found a few posts where people had the same troubles I was having. Someone mentioned that it doesn't work if you're using a computer also connected to the encryption / enterprise servers... Well my dad occasionally uses his desktop PC for work, so I figured this was the case.

Thank you, saudadeii, as well for the Mac instructions. I followed those (downloaded the latest BB Desktop software for Mac, followed the terminal commands). After entering the second line of commands, the whole thing just instantly shut itself off, and took about 5-10 minutes to fully reload / reinstall / reboot. When it came back (I decided to skip the "back up" part of the instructions -- I don't have anything on here to back up yet) it greeted me with the traditional Blackberry setup screens, minus the prompt to set up a device password. Looked under security settings, and there's no trace of Encryption software, IT Policy, or any of that sh!t.

So to anyone else having trouble removing IT Policy -- Make sure the computer you use is also clean!

Thanks, guys.

Another stupid question: Installing languages.

Now that I've got a completely clean Bold 9000, my only other gripe is that it's in English(US), with no other language choices. Ideally, the phone would be in German. The only instructions I could find were either:

1. Download new firmware for the device through the BB website. Install via BB Desktop Software. Unfortunately, the firmware is .exe, and I am on a Mac...

2. Open the BB Desktop Software. Connect device. Install new language. This is hardly descriptive. I doubt there's some secret "install language" button in the software, and the instructions are entirely too vague.

Any help would be appreciated.
