phone wont turn on, only red light?!

just bought a phone today off this guy, he said it worked but he hadnt used it in a while so im guessing the battery is completely dead. when i plug it into my computer, the red light sometimes turns on (sometimes doesnt), but i havent been able to turn it on. what do i do?!

Try a new battery. Or maybe leave on the charger a few hours to see if the current battery works at all.
