MAJOR File Free/Battery Life Problem
help me!!
lol im a brand new blackberry user, just got my bold about two weeks ago
ive had no complaints until the past few days...something is draining my battery and file free memory ridiculously!!!
The past two days my battery life lasts for about 4 hours and i'm barely using it...minimal sms texting and minimal internet usage.
Yesterday my battery drained from full 5 bars to completely drained and device turning off in 5 hours.
today it went from full overnight 5 bar charge to low battery warning in about 5 hours. Like i said im at work, using the phone minimally.
Also i noticed that the file free memory is at 0 bytes. Every time i do anything on the phone i get the clock with the winding hand.
I pretty much assumed it was some sort of application draining all this memory and battery life so i removed most of them and am still having trouble
my next step was going to wipe the memory and start all over
but i figured i would post here for some help before i got that drastic
so with that i look to all you blackberry gurus for some much needed help
remember im a total newbie so anything you can suggest is helpful and also i may need specific instructions...lol
thanks!! - 05-15-2009, 05:42 PM #2
Your battery is probably dying because of the file free, so you probably only have one problem (i.e. every time you try to do something the phone has to work hard to free resources and struggles).
If you don't mind wiping the phone, I would backup your contacts, etc, wipe the phone with JL_cmdr, install OS 4.6.0.266 on your PC, use crackmem to remove any extra crap you don't want, then install the OS to your phone.
If you don't need DocsToGo don't install that as that is 4mb+ right there (don't install BB maps either)...My website http://papped.webatu.com - 05-15-2009, 05:45 PM

i have a philadelphia phillies app and an espn app which are basically just quick links to their web pages, Facebook, Google maps, Hockey News, Quickpull, Blackberry App World, and Ticketmaster.
I had more apps but i deleted them in hopes of freeing up some memory, but it didnt free up any! - 05-15-2009, 05:52 PM #6
Did you reset the device after the delete?

i didnt do it each individual time because i was removing each application individually. Is a reset considered powering off and on or using quickpull because I have done both of those

Yeah, just wanted to make sure it had been done at least once.
I would do as I said earlier then. Use the Destkop Manager to do an Advanced backup of only the stuff you need (make sure you click File>Save and save it to a .ipd file):
Address Book
Emails
SMS
etc
Then wipe the phone with JL_cmdr.
Then install 4.6.0.266, etc as I listed above.
Then after all that restore the backed up data from your .ipd file
Your file free should be at about 60mb before reinstalling your apps (assuming you get rid of most of the extra crap when using CrackMem). My website http://papped.webatu.com - 05-15-2009, 05:59 PM

thanks for your help - 05-15-2009, 06:00 PM #10
You have to uninstall the old OS on your PC first btw before installing the new OS on your PC. It should be called something like "blackberry device software v4.6.0 for blackberry 9000" in add/remove programs.

It's not really that complicated.
1 - Advanced backup and save to .ipd file
2 - Uninstall OS from PC
3 - Wipe phone with JL_cmdr
4 - Install 4.6.0.266
5 - Use CrackMem to remove extra crap
6 - Install OS to phone with Desktop Manager (don't install apps you don't need, like BB maps or DocsToGo for example)My website http://papped.webatu.com
