I think im ready, but too scared to try!
Okay, I think im ready to upgrade my OS.(im kind of scared cause i might mess up my phone)
Can you all please help me on how I can do it. Is it very difficult? im only running .162 and I read a lot of threads saying its better to upgrade. Does anyone know of a website or link that will help me step by step?? and is it worth upgrading?
Thanks!!: - 01-27-2009, 06:21 AM #2
Do a search on upgrade procedure. It's easy and definitely worth upgrading. If you can transfer music to and from iTunes then you should have no trouble with an OS upgrade.

you can ususally download them directly from blackberry.com or if your carrier has a support website.

Also, you can use this one, just make sure you follow the instructions and delete the vendor.xml file.

thanks!!! I guess Ill have to wait for my day off from work to do this. It takes a while huh??

I would allocate about an hour to perform this for the first time, once everything is downloaded. you definitely dont want to rush this process, or become impatient, as it would have a far worse affect then just waiting an extra day til you have the timE!

There are some guides out there that say u have to do a wipe of the phone before u upgrade, but this is not necessary. Just download the firmware OS from the blackberry website, install the .exe file from the site, delete the vendor.xml file, plug in your bb, desk manager should then detect the bb and prompt for upgrade, click "ok/next," and that's it. That's how it worked for me anyway.
I'm still a newb with my bb too. This is my first PDA/phone too. Considering I upgraded from the motorola v3 razr. Glad I waited to get (in my opinion) the best phone ever.

I have done this two different ways and the second method is how I do it now...
~~~~~
Includes some threads which add some specifics on the procedure:
**Updated**How To Back-up 3rd Party Applications**Updated http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...cations-53201/
"A"
Here's the way I used to do an upgrade:
I followed the JLcommander Wipe and deleting the vendor.xml procedure.
Proper Upgrade / Downgrade Procedure http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/prop...ocedure-53359/
How-To Wipe with JL_Cmder http://forums.crackberry.com/f2/how-...l_cmder-53502/
"B"
The way I do it now, quicker but more selections to make using CrackMem:
Do the aforementioned backup and 3rd party backup etc...
CrackMem... http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/cra...eleased-52044/
CrackMem you choose the delete Vendor.xml in the process.
Procedure for upgrades is:
1. Uninstall the older version from the PC
2. Install the newer OS to the PC.
3. Change the theme on the device to carrier default.
4. Run CrackMem, make desired changes: select the OS; omit the stuff you don't need; select delete Vendor.xml
5. I had DM running in Background (don’t think you need to), plugged in my BB
6. Click Wipe
During the upgrade, the device is wiped.
Afterwards, I reinstall the 3rd party apps file as per the [http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...cations-53201/
Here’s the quote from that specifically...
RESTORATION
1) After you've loaded the OS go back & run the Apploader & Select ADD
2) "Browse" to find the folder we saved with your PIN # and Double click on the file named yourpin.alx.
3) Your 3rd Party Apps should appear in the Apploader screen
4) Select Finish to load Apps to device
5) Now you may restore other data from a previous backup.I am not young enough to know everything.
dun fret man
it is a pretty straightforward procedure though it did freak me out the first time i tried it
read up on the posts here and u should be good to go"They may take our lives, but they can never take OUR CRACKBERRY!" - 01-27-2009, 10:48 PM #12
^^ yes... The freak out is part and partial to the OS install process... White screen of death... error on screen... Then after install it takes forever to re-boot (don't unplug until you're done). This is all normal.
Let us know how you make out, if you haven't taken the plunge already.
i say go for it man
as long as u have read up carefully, nothing is gonna go wrong
even if it does, there's plenty of support here"They may take our lives, but they can never take OUR CRACKBERRY!" - 01-28-2009, 01:03 AM #15
I agree with every response on here. Especially with the last one. If something was to go wrong you will get plenty of help here. And like I always tell people before upgrading an OS, do your own full backup just in case before you even download. Just a pre-caution. On a thread the other day someone had an upgrade go wrong and he lost everything. I felt bad for the guy. So do the backup on your own beforehand and you'll be good!
there's some talk about the media bug appearing only on odd numbered os ie .215, .217 and .219
.216 is fine
but i read that .228 though an even numbered os seems to have the bug as well"They may take our lives, but they can never take OUR CRACKBERRY!" - 01-28-2009, 02:56 PM #22
