Default How to properly install new 5.0 OS on your Bold 9000

Ok, so I just literally spent the last 24 hours (minus some sleeping time) trying upgrade the OS on my Bold from the 4.6 to the 5.0. I finally got it done, and it took me a lot of downloading and time trying to figure out why it wouldn't install, but now I consider myself an expert at it.

- First you're going to want to download the latest Desktop Manager (5.0...) from the blackberry website. na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/

- While this is downloading you can also download the 5.0 and save it on your computer. The trickier part is to get this on your phone. You can find them all over the internet. There are two different kinds you can get; the leaked OS or an official version from RIM from certain providers. Even if your provider does not offer a 5.0 OS for you, you will still be able to use them. I got mine from here. It's an official version from Bell Mobility. I'm on the Rogers network but it works perfectly fine... crackberry.com/official-blackberry-bold-9000-os-5-0-0-411-bell-mobility

- Make sure that you do not install the OS on your computer until the Desktop Manager is fully downloaded and installed. This will take a while so open up a new window and play a game. I recommend a good online game show game to pass the hour.

- After Desktop Manager is up and running go ahead and close it up for now. Go ahead and install the OS on your computer. It'll take you through about 3 different windows with nothing to them and should take about 5-7 minutes.

- Sometimes it will prompt you to open up Desktop Manager but we need to do a couple more things before we do this. On your hard drive go to Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/Apploader... find vendor.xml and delete it. Make sure you empty your recycle bin after. It's very important that you don't delete any other files in this folder. Keep this folder open because you might need it later.

- Next, you will need to turn off the Internet on your computer. This is important because Desktop Manager is designed to not allow you to install operating systems that have been leaked or that do not match your mobile provider. Open up the Desktop Manager and wait to get an update. If you get an update that includes the 5.0 OS you've succeeded and you are on your way to enjoying a faster, more reliable bold with a way better battery. If not we'll continue.

- With your internet still off, and Desktop Manager fully closed, go back to the folder where vendor.xml was and open up loader.exe. Hopefully a list will generate including the 5.0 OS. If it does you're in the clear. If not... it's not looking good.

- If this didn't work, you need to close this folder. Now your next step will be to download BBSAK, Blackberry Swiss Army Knife. After this, you gotta do some more reading cuz I can't help you with this. If I can do anything else let me know. Good luck.

Thanks but taking a few minutes to search here on CB would have readily revealed everything you wrote and that took you 24 hours to figure out . , . .

5.0 is wayyyy faster than the old OS. I find the reception is actually not as good as it used to be in some areas, especially indoors, but I don't know if it actually has anything to do with it. Other than that, it's well worth it.

What advantages will OS 5 bring to an AT&T Bold 9000?

Can you do the update on a Mac? Or do you have to use a PC?

I'm considering this 5.0 OS myself but am told Opera Mini 4.2 won't work with it. I wonder if Facebook 1.6 will (can't use 1.7 as it requires a BIS and I use "generic" data).
