| | Help - cannot upgrade OS to 5.0 no matter what?
Hi all, Got a rather oldish 9000 bold, that I need to upgrade to OS 5.0 (right now 4.6.0) but no matter what I try, I cannot update it. This is what I was trying:
1) Downloaded and installed latest BB Desktop Software, and going "Update". It says that no updates are available. If I click on "View other packages", the list has my existing installed 4.6.0 as the latest package
2) My carrier (Orange UK) emailed me a link where I downloaded the official 9000M_PBr5.0.0_rel1137_PL5.2.0.64_A5.0.0.681_Orang e_UK.exe firmware verified and released by them. That installes "BB Device Software Version 5.0.0" on my PC fine - and then it does absolutely nothing. Some program gets installed on the PC, but does not interact with USB connected phone whatsoever.
3) Downloaded 9000j_PBr5.0.0_rel661_PL5.2.0.33_A5.0.0.411_Bell_M obility_Inc.exe. At the end of installation it actually asks me if I want to look for updates to my OS, and then says "There are no BlackBerry device software updates available".
4) Downloaded 9000jAllLang_PBr5.0.0_rel1728_PL5.2.0.89_A5.0.0.10 67_AT_T.exe I found searching this forum, at the end of installation it asks me if I want to launch BB Device Software. I do, and I go Device-Upgrade, it checks for a while, and says "No available packages for update". If I view other available packages, they are (again), 4.6.0 and below.
5) Found Loader.exe manually in C:\Program Files\RIM\AppLoader folder. If I start it, it reads in details from my phone, but next screen where I should have an option to add new OS, I just see 2 of my applications in the list. "ADD" button simply opens the Open File window. I can see folders C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9000EastAsia_v5.0.0.411_P5.2.0.33 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9000M_v5.0.0.681_P5.2.0.64 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9000AllLang_v5.0.0.1067_P5.2.0.89
on my PC which are full of alx and xml files (I tried the delete vendor.xml trick), but I just can't upload them to the phone?
6) Tried update via website (uk blackberry com BlackBerry - Device Software v5.0 - Download BlackBerry Device Software Today)[/B] When I click "update" button, it says that no updates are available.
7) On the phone Options->Advanced Options->Check for updates ("Current version is 4.6.0.303") - "No updates available"
How can this be happenning when OS 5 runs perfectly fine on 9000 bold? I spent hours with poor people on tech support line from Orange UK, two of them mentioned that they installed OS 5 on 9000 so many times. What else can I try, short of smashing it against the wall?
Appreciate any suggestions. Total noob with all of this, all above I've only learnt since yesterday.

Hi
If you look in this same forum to my thread a couple down from yours titled "Please help me install the Device OS" you can see the advice elite1 gave me to solve the same issue. I had had OS 5 on my Bold 9000 but lost the address book a couple of days ago and all device manager would let me do was install OS 4.6 which I did not want to do.
Now I am on the very latest T Mobile version (even though I am on Vodafone) and I have my address book back.
It's the bit of the thread where s/he talks about the steps including deleting all the files in App Loader that you need.

You should try this: back your device via desktop software ...delete all OS's off your pc.. reboot the computer.. install the latest OS of your choice... in C:\Program Files\RIM\AppLoader folder, delete the vendor.xml file ...open up loader.exe, take the battery out of your device and plug it into your pc and it it should come up unknown pin.. click next and select what you would like to install and click next. It will start the reflash and on waiting for device initialization, pop in the battery and then it will complete its process. After the install, restore your info via desktop software..
Hope that helps.

Hope that helps. | Thanks, but as I put above in the starting post, I have tried deleting the vendor.xml from C:\Program Files\RIM\AppLoader folder at first.
However, I did find what the problem was - there are two copies of vendor.xml file throughout the system. One was on the folder above, but the other is in your local user folder. I forgot the correct path, but it was somewhere in C:\Docs and Settings\User\Application Data\Temp or something similar. People could find it by doing a simple DOS command
dir vendor.xml /s /a
After deleting the second vendor.xml, AppLoader installed OS 5 without any problems. God, the hours I've wasted on this...
