Give me a reason to go 5.0!
So, I'm curious and considering going to 5.0. Tell me why? Where is the win?
Speed?
Threaded SMS?
Better UI?
Better memory Management?
What was your motivation to go 5.0, other than "I like to try the latest/greatest"
It appears to work fine for most people and apps, I'm just curious to fine the reason people are upgrading before an official release. - 10-13-2009, 10:09 AM #2
because the official release might not come around for about 542484 more years. Regardless of what RIM says.
if you would search this topic, ud find better results.
As a matter of fact, theres about two threads that i can see right under this thread.

Far more professional setup across the board...superfast browser speed
I lost about 15 MB of top end memory but it makes no difference..I've gone down to 20MB with numerous large apps open and hasn't affected performance at all.

with more and more apps coming up to speed and being able to work with the new OS, its only a matter of time before no one will care about the "official" release. IMHO I upgraded to 5.0 a while back and am loving every minute of it. everything about is true, especially memory managment. ive ran on low mem too and haven't seen decreased performance

Threaded SMS, superfast browser, WORD WRAP WHEN TYPING IN BROWSER TEXT FIELDS, much better ringing/alert options, native file browser, better folder structure and browsing options for media files, cooler startup screen with progress indicator, now compatible with almost every app out there, and of course, speed, speed, speed. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, I've been on 5 long enough now it's hard to remember.
Did I mention the browser word wrap issue is finally fixed? I think people that have been holding back for compatibility are pretty safe taking the plunge with version 5.0.0.238. As someone who's used every 5.0 build since the first one was leaked several months ago, I can say this build is a pleasure to use.
Just make sure to backup everything first, make sure you fully understand the proper upgrading procedures, familiarize yourself with the browser fix and programs that will need updating ahead of time so you don't freak out if you need to troubleshoot a bit at first, and then upgrade and enjoy.

i have an important question- how do you upgrade to 5.0.0 238 on your phone using blackberry desktop manager for mac. i downloaded the os onto my computer but it does not showup onto my desktop manager. when i try to update, it says there no updates available. also how do you delete the xml file on the mac?

Don't do it. Not worth it at all. Official .297 is very stable. No need to go to a not that much different OS that you have to do a browser fix for your browser to work properly and not all 3rd party apps are compatible.
The Storm version is a HUGE difference. If you have a Storm, do it, if not, stay with what you have...totally not worth it.Blackberry Guru 9700!! - 10-13-2009, 08:28 PM #16
i say do it, i've been running it since the day it leaked, no issues here, its much more stable than .297, all of my apps that i use are compatible, and the browser fix is a one time thing that takes 2 minutes, after thats done, you're set. overall take you around an hour probably, big difference in experience.

Upgrade if you want:
-Less lag and less annoying clock (I find even with only 20-25mb free, OS 5.0 is faster in ALL aspects over OS 4.6 with 40mb+ free)
-Threaded texting
-Much faster media and on boot up
-An OK browser (upgrade from Pretty Bad browser)
Do NOT upgrade if:
-You want to use Beejive in the near future (they have pretty much alienated their BlackBerry following after going iPhone, they probably won't release a 5.0 compatible version for months)
-You're not comfortable attempting things like the Browser fix
-You use Ely's themes (HTC, Win7, etc)
-You're annoyed by minor application incompatibilities such as WeatherBug not updating on the homescreenwww.balanceyours.com

Man, that's an interesting assessment. So many upgrades, for a few minutes of extra work the first time you run it. Fixing the browser is NOT hard from a PC. It takes about 10 minutes. And the only apps I can't get working with it are Quickpull (the function of which I can accomplish by pressing Alt+Shift+Del) and TicketMaster (who cares?). Some of the functions of the Google Mobile app don't work, but all the apps it links to work fine individually, and the search itself is already built into the browser.

I'm not trying to be rude, but searching the forums isn't extremely fun from the mobile version of this site, and I'd have to search, same as you. There's a "super OS page" stickied at the top of the beta OS forum. That thread probably has a link to 5.0.0.238 for download, but a search for 'Bold leak 5.0.0.238' will probably yield a download link too. A search for 'proper upgrade/downgrade procedure' will reveal a thread of the same (or similar name). Searching for 'Bold OS 5.0.0.238 compatibility' will give you the list of programs you're after, and 'OS 5.0 browser fix' will show you how to fix it if your only browser options are Hotspot Browser and MEdiaNet after the upgrade. Honestly I think more reading than what I type should be done before upgrading anyway. You learn a lot about the device that way and it makes it much less scary and time consuming should you encounter a minor snag along the way. If you come across questions a search can't help you answer, the folks here will answer them for you.

Did you do anything special to get Beejive to work? I've tried every version from 1.1.1 to the new 1.9.6 beta, and they all give me different kinds of errors. 1.1.2 just gave me:
then when I go back it gives me:Code:class net.rim.device.api.system.ControlledAccessException, null
Thanks.Code:Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

nope, just make sure that you don't have ubertwitter installed, and that you download from the site, and don't just restore it, download link:

Yeah, I've gone through the two betas directly one by one but I still get errors like the one above.
Don't have Uber but I've got SocialScope installed, you think that would be an issue?www.balanceyours.com

I'm currently reading these forums while installing the new Java on my blackberry bold 9000. But I have 2 quick questions:
How do I do this browser 'fix' ? Is there a user guide for this?
And
There are 2 folders in my Application Support folder that have numbers (examples are 3asbue093ndsofd). Will that cause a problem if I just copy over from one folder to the next since I'm ignoring the other folder? - 10-14-2009, 01:31 PM
