BIS = Blackberry Internet Service. So, no internet service, no internet. Edge, 3G, those are both data networks, not totally sure about GPRS though. You could probably get away with doing it over Wi-Fi if you have it enabled, but I cannot remember if the Bold has Wi-Fi on it.
That would be the only work-around, however. Good luck in those endeavors!Scan the barcode for my Droid's PIN number. I recommend "Bar Code Scanner" since it seems to work real well.
How do I Google something? - 05-19-2009, 11:44 AM #3
Yes, you can browse using wifi. but you will be charged data if you send MMS, or use an application that requires internet access unless you are around a hotspot.

I see..thx a lot guys!!that means u can only browse internet w/ wifi n BIS enabled?other than that..u r unable?I've heard rumours of
Opera mini, which was said is able to use the regular data to browse..not using BIS/ wifi..
Is that rumour true?

BIS and WiFi are not the same thing. MMS, push email, and apps that constantly update or make themselves available, all require a data plan (either BIS or BES). But browsing works just fine over WiFi. And you don't have to tell AT&T a thing if you're careful... the browser works fine when your phone's radio is completely turned off, as long as you're near a hotspot, so you can control it straight from the Bold. It's actualy a great phone for WiFi only internet use.
The 8900 is perhaps even better for non-data plan types, as it doesn't have a 3G radio, which is totally a worthless and sometimes counterproductive feature, especially if you don't have a data plan. You don't need your voice to transfer faster than it it does on the EDGE network!

You have a WAP browser. I don't know what Telstra calls it, it'll probably have a Telstra icon. This will not use BIS data when browsing.

You don't need to "enable" it. Find the icon and use it.

Just keep in mind also that a WAP browser uses data, also. A BIS/BES account just allows for access to the BlackBerry network for push email and their browser. No BIS/BES, no Blackberry browser or Blackberry messenger.
Opera is just a browser application, similar to Microsoft's Internet explorer, Apple's Safari or Mozilla's Firefox. Opera still uses a data plan to browse the internet from the phone."Si Je Puis" - Clan Colquhoun - 05-20-2009, 06:30 AM

I would not own this phone without a data plan of some kind.

Real post....
ive had the phone for 11 days now, upgraded os to .247, unbranded using a different vsm, and, worst of all, i have broken the warranty seal because i blacked the bold out... - 05-20-2009, 09:58 AM #14
You can use Opera Mini without a Blackberry Data plan. To enable it you must put your carrier's APN setting onto the device at options > advanced options >TCP. You will however need a generic data plan to cover costs.

We'll..thanx!..should try it soon..but suddenly a simple question bumped into my head..
While u had changed the apn settings, when u hv BIS enabled n u browse with either bb browser or opera..does it still charge u? Thx..

It depends on your carrier, for example if I was to run opera on o2 UK's mobile web settings which the BB data plan does not cover then o2 UK would charge me extra. Other networks do not charge.
Opera now uses BIS access so I've no problems there

You don't "enable" BIS... BIS is your data plan. If you don't have a data plan, browse with only WiFi enabled and you will not be charged for data use.
