Default bold, red flashing light, 4 times, is it really dead?

Ok, Yesterday I was waiting for an important call but needed a shower so I took my phone into the bathroom and put it in a dry safe place where I would hear it ring if need be. It did so I quickly jumped out of the shower, dried hands and answered a message.
Few minutes later when back at my desk at home I realised the bold was behaving wierd, key presses were not doing the right function, ie a press of the back key brought up jk or other letters on the screen etc.
It did not sustain water damage, at worst my hands were merely damp when used so I just figured pop it down for a while and let it 'dry' (it wasn't wet but you know what I mean, its all I could think of) picked it up maybe 15 minutes later and it appeared to have died.
Now, its 15 months old (and was a refurbished handset direct from 02 when I got it so its had a hard life) its been bumped, and not long after I got it I broke the screen (LCD bleed) so I had it repaired which forfeited the warranty, also the trackball has been a constant nightmare to me, it stops working in one or more direction regularly, i've found the solution to this to be to clean the trackball gently with a q-tip dipped in clear alcohol, after some time this usually works, but a couple of months ago I could not get this to work at all so after 2 weeks of a phone that would not scroll left I had the trackball replaced. I now had issues with the trackball not selecting when I push down but this is got around by using the return key or it does sometimes work if you push hard.
so, with this new flashing red light failure I took it back to the place that replaced the screen (well recommended repair place in wimbledon London)
They kept it for 24 hours and when I went back to collect it they said it was a component failure and beyond economic repair. Quite truthfully though I got the impression that they actually just couldn't be bothered as it was a hard job.
Came home and started researching, other posts I have read lead me to believe that if the LED comes on in any way all is not lost.
My computer does not recognise the phone when I try and connect it via USB, although just now I tried again and windows acknowledged that a device had just been plugged in, but the blackberry software still did not detect anything.
what can I try now? I am not tech savvy so it will need to be clearly laid out for idiots
I am quite distraught! please help guys!
If there is no chance of me starting up the phone again does anyone know if someone somewhere can fix it? its way out of warranty so thats no use.
Has anyone used a data recovery service and is it possible?
many thanks!

there seems to be several interpretations of what this means according to several forums, most common diagnosis is a fried rom (whatever that means) or a corrupt OS

1) Dry your phone.
Remove the battery from the phone (you can do this while you do #2)
Put the phone into a bag with dry rice for a day/the rice will absorb excess moisture,

2) Remove the battery for a full 24 hours.
Return the battery to the phone. The system will/should startup correctly.

3) Re-install the OS.
If you can get the phone to connect by USB to PC, then follow these steps

well the phone has spent well over 24 hours in its lentils and I just tried inserting the battery, still the same, red LED lights for several seconds then begins blinking four times at intervals. Its back in the lentils. This is a bad sign right?

Try a OS reload(if you can connect to the pc) like a poster said and see if that works.

Tested on my dead Bold 9000

- Do not plug the phone any time soon.
- Delete current version of Desktop Manager and install v4.6 preferrably without media manager
- Uninstall any Blackberry operating systems on your PC (Windows control panel)
- Re-boot the PC.
- Installed the phone OS I knew my phone had.
- Delete vendor.xml from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
- Re-boot the PC
- Connect phone via usb
- Launch Desktop Manager> Update Applications>START or
- Launch via console "loader.exe /nojvm", then COM1 should appear on the list

If pc can not detect phone>on Blackberry Device Manager on taskbar klik Device Connection.
then activate COM1

- The USB error should no longer appear and the software check list should.

Hope this will Help.

I'm sorry to say but 4x flashing led is a hardware failure.
I had the same and CAN NOT be repaired. Is something hardware.
I tried everything was mad and sat almost 24 hour at my desktop to see how to repair it, but none.
Went to a friend of my who repairs blackberry and he said I will try everything, he replaced the rom chip but none, so now I bought a new bold9000 and sold the other one for pieces, there the screen was new and with some extra money bought a other one.
I'm sorry to say this but it save you time and madness.
Had the same as you described 4x red flashing led and also the computer ping when connected but nothing more, non of all the bb software programmed recognized the bb to programmed it again.
Offcourse I hope for you that you resolve this problem but don't hope to much.
When you google at "blackberry led blinking 4x"
You can read how many people have the same problem and no solution there are different led blinking but as you can read with google the 4x led is the worst.

This is the second time it has happend to me. The first time I recoverd it using the technique described above on how to reload a nuked Blackberry, unfortunatly this time after several days trying I'am still unable to connect the bold to the computer. I am begining to derive a kind of perverse pleasure from persisting with this idotic pastime. If I ever have any success I will post.
In Gassho.

IMO, the blackberry with 4 LED blinking means:

1. D.E.A.D
2. Good.Bye.My.Friend
3. Please.Throw.Me.Away
4. S**t.I.Am.Dead
5. ___.___.___.____ (fill in the blanks)

Btw, I'm currently having the same issue. And sick enough.

if simultaneous keys/letters come up when pressing any button, that means somehow ur hands werent completely dry ..... some moisture got into the phone somehow

Default I must be god then.. Because I fixed it..

Had this once before.. Or something like it at least.. 4 lights.. Yes.. Good sign that its ed.. When i plugged the bb into my laptop it recognised it (Woo!) .. But whenever i tried to put the OS back on there it died half way and gave me an error (Boo!).. Sooo plugged it back in.. tried again.. and whenever it sounded like it was actually trying to talk to the device.. rather than just downloading something.. i unplugged my bb.. Yes.. I know.. This is usually very bad.. But did this once or twice.. and wooooop.. it dropped down to a whole new level of ed.. which can be easily be repaired.. Just flash it like ur supposed to with bbm.. Woop.. My blackberry has just turned on and ima gonna play.. I actually made an account just to post this so i hope it helps and my rantings havnt bored anyone.. Cya!
