Bold Blackout job Casualties
My parts came in today from china.
1x black trackball
1x carbon fiber look battery cover
1x black bazel
I arrived home very excited to fit my parts after a bad day at work.
I quickly looked up some advice on how to proceed on the CB forum and you tube
Satified I knew what I was doing I went to work.
First casualty was the end / power button broke clean off the keyboard aSsembly while trying to remove it.
Second casualty was the to little buttons at the bottom right and left of the housing. Now forgive my stupidity but I don't understand what they were for. I do now see there are holes right into the inside of my phone... Which I don't like.
Third casualty is the motion on my trackball. The trackball goes up down and left perfectly with usual motion and pressure required. Trackball will not go right unless I put lots of pressure on the ball and even then only moves right intermittently.
The phone looks great aside from the two gaping holes and the broken ebd key, which I plan to fix tomorrow with a dab of super glue. But overall a pretty painful process and I know thr trackball issue is goinb to drive me nuts!
Any thoughts? Anyone else experienced problems with trackball motion after a refit?

The holes that you're referring too, are they directly on the left and right side on the bottom of your biezel which is on an angle? If so, those were charging pins that you took out of your biezel...
For your trackball issue. Are you sure that the metal square protector didn't come off and you made sure all 4 clips are on? Are you sure that you put the trackball in correctly?
In terms for the trackball, if all the above is correct, perhaps you may of gotten a smaller trackball. - 02-23-2010, 11:25 PM #3
I was having some similliar issues with my trackball, when took it out again, i realized I accidently installed it wrong and the metal housing wasn't clipped fully.
However, I realized, whatever trackball you get, it will not feel the same as the OEM one. - 02-23-2010, 11:30 PM

I just did a little research and figured out they were the charging pins. No problems here. I don't have a charging pod, always charge with wall charger or usb cable.
As for the trackball. I'm not so much worried that the motio be exactly the same as stock, bit would be nice of I could scroll right.
I might try taking it apart one more time and see if the trackball is all clipped on right. It stands to reason that I'd I need ao apply extra pressure in one direction only perhaps the clips on that side of it are not all the way in?
Will report back when I've had another go.

Just took it apart. Took the trackball off and reseated it all.
Same issue unfortunately. Possible to receive a defective trackball ?
What are your thoughts?

And the brightest berry owner of the year award goes to....
I just took iit apart again to put the stock trackball back in.
I fitted the stock one in the same manner I fit the black one and the metal cover piece wouldn't go back on. Turned thr stock trackball through 90 deg and it fit. Ah ha!
Put the black one back in turned through 90 deg and bam perfect motion.
I can only assume that because the ball wasn't fitted right only three sides of the cover were clamped in and therefore more pressure required to scroll in one direction.
All sorted now.
So updated casualty list.
2x charging pins
1x end / power key. Hoping to fix tomorrow with some glue.
My advice to people attempting their own bole black or white out is:
Be GENTLE!
Watch as many videos as you need before hand!
Don't rush! I know you're excited! Do NOT rush.
And oh yeah. Be gentle! Everything slots and clips in and out quite effortlessly if you take your time and use the right tools!
I will post some pics tomorrow wheb I have applied first aid to my end key.

Thanks quicksilver. I always thought the same way. "Why would I void my warrenty for that" etc. But there is so much help available on the interwebs and here on CB. After my brief panic attack it really wasn't that hard or that bad.
I will post pics of the new tricked out Bold when I get to the office today and you can see the havoc I created.

Glad you got it figured out. I remember when i took my old curve apart i stripped 2 of the heads off the screws so i couldnt get it screwed all the way shut and so much dust and crap got in there. Now i take my time with my bold when i take it apart and i've never had a problem.
Whats wrong with your charging pins? you took them off? you can put them back in on the new bezel if you want........ - 02-24-2010, 05:18 PM #12
it isn't easy blacking out your bold. as you mentioned it requires super precision. people don't realize that they can't rush these things. when i had my bold, the trackball had the same issue, it wouldn't move down.but it wasn't because i blacked out my bold. i didn't want to gamble with that. but the reason was liquid damage, which ultimately destroyed my phone forever. people who want to white their bold, don't need to take a chance. just buy the whiteberry ).

I disagree. I don't think that modding your bold is 'hard' or even should be avoided.
I believe that I should have taken a little more time personally and watched a couple more videos before I tore mine apart.
But if you take your time and realize that nothing requires you to use force when reconstructing your phone you won't end up crushing your charing pins like I did
Still waiting to procure some super glue to fix the end key.
Once I've fixed that I'll post some pictures.BB Progression: CB Black Pearl 8100 > CB Blacked out Bold 9000 (stolen sadly) > iPhone 3G (jailbroken with Redsn0w) > CB Curve 8310 > White Torch 9810.

So here are some bad pictures taken with my other bold as to what the blacked out one looks like.
As I said I fixed the end / power key with some glue, so it all looks pretty good.

Thanks Scotty. I was starting to pine for a new device a little. Most def. A new BB but a new one non the less.
These little upgrades have sort or re-excited me about my Bold and I'm not planning to keep it going forward.
Now that I realize what a breeze taking it apart is I may very well try getting a replacement screen.

Congrats on being brave enough to do the job...I remember when I blacked out my bold, I was sweating the whole time (which didn't help the shaky hands any). All I could see were the $$$ if I screwed up. Fortunately, went well and booted up!
Enjoy your blacked out bold...nothing looks better!__________________________

I blacked out my Bold 9000 once before. Everything went smoothly. No issues with installation of the new black parts. The issue I would eventually have is that the paint on the bezel started to chip off. It seemed like someone had painted over the original chrome bezel. I eventually had to take it off. But it did look sweet for a while.
