Bb bold and iphone
Ok so I have had a blackberry ever sense february. I started with the pearl 8110. Now I have a bb bold. So far I love this device. I love the media. Emailing on this phone rocks. Only drawback for me is the application memory. I am thinking of upgrading to a iphone 3g or 3gs. Was wanting to know your opinions on this switch. Should I do it or should I not. I text a lot. Do lots of web browsing. Use it for tethering. Would I be happy with the performance of the iphone? The battery life? Tethering? Everything really.
Thanks again in advance.

since you are a texter, i suggest staying with a blackberry. if you an issue with the application memory, just get the 9700. the battery life of the iphone sucks. the browser of the iphone is still the best browser of any mobile phone. but the new berry browser coming out next year, will put blackberry on the same playing field as the iphone regarding web browser.

Interesting. Why does rim make the bold out of all the blackberries with the least amount of memory for apps? I just don't understand that one. I know the tour has twice the app memory but no wifi. I do love the bold so far. Love the wifi and 3g but the bold does suck when streaming video unless poor quality. I have used several os 5.0 leaks but still low app memory.
Just curious how much will the bb onyx cost?

most likely $299.99 with 2 year contract. and probably $600 retail

Ouch!!! That's really high. I bought my bold off ebay for only 200 dollars which is still lot of money. But why are iphones so cheap compared to blackberries if they are so revolutionary?

Because the iPhone demographic doesn't have very much money - teenagers.

blackberries are a high standard compared to the iphones. you get what i mean lol.

concerning the price...you're confusing unlocked and locked phones with subsidized carrier pricing. iPhone's may be 99-299 off a (very expensive) two year contract, but the 3gs goes for at least $600 used off ebay unlocked. Blackberries have roughly similar pricing overall. The bold has the least application memory out of the current phones(tour, 8900) because it came out before them.

But why would rim make such a great phone with such little application memory? Plus a bad camera to boot?

tennis, i was very excited about the storm 2. hearing that the storm 2 came equipped with NA 3g frequencies was a thrill to hear at first but as mysteries became clear, that thrill diminished. storm 2 not coming to rogers or at&t took away any joy left over. now if you do get a storm 2 from vodaphone and run it on at&t, you will only get edge and not 3g speed. i don't feel liking getting the storm 2 for edge only. i am new yorker, so i need my 3g speeds lol. oh well, i will be getting a new berry in 2010. tennis, your best option is to to wait for the onyx.storm 2 with edge will be a fluke. the onyx on the other hand will have 3g. plus if you have issues with your new onyx, at&t will handle it. if you get storm 2 from voda, and have problems with it, then you will not be aided by at&t.
solution: be patient, get the onyx.{"for better for worse,for richer for poorer,in sickness and in health,cherish,and to obey,trust u and respect u,love you faithfully good times and bad times,care and protect u,comfort and encourage,stay with for all eternity"}

Ok well that sucks. An att rep told me they were getting the storm 2 but oh well. My only real complaint is that we are so limited by media on blackberries. Can't stream most standard file types such as wma. Asx. And so fourth

Because when the original BOLD came out last year. that was the standard for app memory, technology is ever increasing and so is the "cutting edge" technology, i bet 6 months after the onyx is out people are gonna be rockin "storm 3" or "tour 2"'s with 512 mb RAM. the "new" technology is only new for so long then its old an obsolete...........welcome the the technology train lol
EDIT: same with the camera.......when the BOLD came out 2mp cameras were pretty close to cutting edge - 10-11-2009, 08:05 AM

Lol. Well I know when I had my bb pearl 8100 even though it was only 1.3 mp camera. To me it took much sharper pictures then the upgraded camera on the bold. Just confused on one thing how much app memory are on those iphones?

I just got done playing with the iphone 3gs and its pretty cool. I see now that blackberries are limited like going to cnn to watch videos. With the iphone it loads it perfectly. Also was on 3g as to my bold was only on EDGE.

(Having just switched from an iPhone 3GS)
I could not get used to the keyboard. (lack of) If you type tons of messages as I do, it gets old real fast.
The iPhone has tons of apps, but honestly I found them distracting. I just want to use the phone, send/receive messages and be done with it, all while not running out of battery by 2pm. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products, but for my personal needs, the iPhone wasn't what I needed.
I have a handful of apps on my Blackberry, but only stuff I consider critical to get things done.
I'll post my 3GS on the marketplace soon, once I have a sufficient post count.Last edited by ogeneo; 10-11-2009 at 07:34 PM.

If you ask whether to choose blackberry or iphone in a blackberry community you'll get the majority answer will be to stay with blackberry.... and that's vice versa if you are in iphone community.
I have been using both of them and a member of blackberry community as well as iphone.
Just to make it clear, I will post my opinion to compare between iphone 3GS with blackberry bold 9000
Games - Off course iphone is better... much better... you don't really use blackberry for games
SMS - I like the clear simple threaded texting on iphone better but bold has better speed to start if the memory doesn't run out (but iPhone bite back with quick reply). Typing is differ to every people but I type on iphone much faster. You will be woowed by iphone's touchscreen. This is not the same for every people... some of my mates keep typing wrong word on iphone touchscreen although it is their only device but some others can do it very quick as you don't need any strength at all to choose a word while in bold you tend to get more accurate click but slower due to the need to press it... Overall I like the iphone sms better...
Browsing - iphone again... much better and usable... webapp is very cool... deviantart, facebook, digg... very good to view on iphone
Email - if you ask me a year ago, blackberry is better because of it's speed and easiness to open a mail.... On the last occasion, I received an email on my bold and iphone both at the same time (push gmail is as quick as blackberry), then to view it, iPhone is better on gui but bold will open it faster as it doesn't need to further downloading (as the iphone took extra 1-3 sec to download the email). However, there is an excel attachment on the email. When the bold open it, it very hard to see it as the excel is a considerably long & wide timetable... On the iphone you'll just need to pinch out and in to find a perfect fit to look at it on the screen and discuss with your boss... In this respect, i find both comparable but iphone gets the edge with attachments
GPS - iphone win... because its big screen and best in the world touchscreen...
Chatting - Bold puts iphone shame on this.... push notification doesn't work, it eats battery... you'll have to wait for the actual app to run before you can reply.... and it's actually took 5-10 secs then another 5 sec for the device to restore to re-connect (although you can keep online for 3 days)... with Bold it is instance although it doesn't have the beautiful & simple graphics as the iphone.... Bold clear winner here
Battery - Both device sucks at battery life, but iphone is worse because it's large screen and the app is actually requires more resource compared to Bold.... Bold winning the battery life although both need daily recharge...
Sound - Bold is actually louder.... It is a bit better than the iphone
Address Book - Both are okay but iphone gets the edge because of it's gui
Sync - iPhone win this..... I found problem and difficulties with bold... it doesn't work as storage and it doesn't have the easiness to sync your photos, music, videos, etc.... iPhone is the winner with small differences
Calendar - both good....
Camera - with the new iphone 3GS tap to focus... iphone is the winner
Video Camera - still think iphone is a clear winner
Overall.... You choose by yourself which feature is more important for you. - 10-11-2009, 09:32 PM #18
A couple minor details. (they matter to me)
The message waiting light. I don't know how many times I picked up the iPhone to check for messages. The light on the Blackberry tells all. Not important? Check the PRE forums, they are dying to get this working on their phones.
Also, auto text (I use it for multiple signatures)
Finally, email filed to folders by an Exchange rule:
iPhone: No way to know the messages are there. The Mail icon will not show the unread count. You have to slide up/down to find your messages. If you have an extensive list of mail folders as I do, it's no fun.Last edited by ogeneo; 10-11-2009 at 09:34 PM.

I am currently with Bold and iPhone 3GS. I would probably not switch from Bold to just 3G, as you may be disappointed (and the primary reason would be speed and non-physical keyboard). But let me give you my experience. I had 3GS, then I got myself Bold, and was my satisfaction & my dissatisfaction was 50/50. Bold is great great great device, great keyboard, great multi-tasking, great message management and LID is just life saver, as well as configurable tones for messages/emails/etc.
But web browsing - no way it even close to iPhone's. Frankly speaking, I can see how Safari on iPhone evolved from 2G to 3GS (in terms of page processing, speed, etc.) -- and I am seriously doubt that RIM can make this happen. Even with their recent purchase of that other Web browser company. I am afraid (I love Bold, again!) that they lost their momentum even to Android (which I hate, it's just doesn't feel right for me).
Currently, what Bold has right now -- it is even not close to iPhones 2G, even not in speed, and definitely not the quality of real web browsing.
I would not be worried about virtual keyboard too much -- in a month you will type very good (landscape mode actually gives really nice keyboard layout and works good for fat fingers). You can work nice with emails, and it would not bother you too much. I know what I gave up:
1. battery life
2. real keyboard
3. message management and tones configuration
4. flash on camera (do you care?)
That's basically it. iPhone 3GS gives me:
1. more apps, some are stupid, but I use about 6-7 of them, which are really good (say iSSH is superior to whatever Blackberries have!, etc.)
2. web browsing is awesome. I can do virtually anything there I can do on laptop
3. emails are real. HTML/whatever else. very good
4. media - with TV cable I can play videos on TV (helps a lot when traveling - in hotels, I can watch my fav videos/movies/etc.)
5. better quality images made on camera (focus), and video
I didn't want to add to this list, but: I figured out that GPS works a little bit better (faster turn on times, operation) on 3GS than on Bold; and much more comfortable using Yelp/Google Maps to "look around" where are you and what is around you for fast coffee/tea/lunch.
I like working with SMSs better on 3GS - say when you are "SMSing" with some person, and new message comes - Bold does not show you that in the "thread". You have to go back to Messages folder and enter "thread" again to see it. iPhone does it right there - so you don't go back-forth every so often.
You certainly lose on multi-tasking, but iPhone tries to sweeten your life by making apps which "remember the status" where they have been. It's not the same, but well-- it does help at least a lil' bit.
There is one thing which I hate (literally, insanely hate hate hate) on Blackberries -- their BIS. This thing is sick. Let me explain. It may be problem of just AT&T, but I have doubts, as my friend has Curve on T-Mobile and it gave same symptoms.
So, even if I have high bar signal (can make calls perfectly, their quality is good on both ends, etc.), I see EDGE or 3G indicator, -- but no BIS indicator -- that means -- NO INTERNET FOR ME. So, Twitter app on Bold does not work, browser does not work, and even email does not come through. Funny? Not much. I do not know what's the deal there, but this is how it is. Happens in many places, not just one - and that drives me nuts.
Literally, with iPhone, I am online more often :-)
Btw, I love Kindle app for iPhone - I can read my books on the go, that's a real part of huge deal for me :-)
So that's the difference for me. Copy-pasting, multiple files attachment, etc., etc. - they are the same. Don't listen if somebody will say about "one attachment per email" or etc. - that's bull**** (probably people who say this just don't know that you need to tap-hold on image and you'll get an option to copy and then you can paste image(s) into email) -- with 3GS and iPhone OS 3 it all works, multiple images, multiple attachments.
My biggest concern now - with Bold, it does not give me too much of the Web. It does have own apps to edit Excel/Word documents - but I am working in high-tech, and I I do "live in the cloud" now :-) if you will -- I do have a lot of stuff in the Internet, and iPhone handles it much better, frankly speaking. We have Google Docs used for the company, we have many documents online, PDF/etc. - works better with iPhone. We do need to edit DOC/ docs sometimes, but there is an app for that.
The UI on iPhone is more intuitive for most people, but I had not problems with Blackberry UI. It's okay for me.
I really would wish for iPhone which looks like Blackberry and has same battery, and has same "Message" all-in-one folder and tone configurations. That would be my wanna-have-right-now-for-any-money :-)
As much as I believe that "tone configuration for emails/etc." will change for future iPhone OS releases, I don't think they are going to change their email management soon, but at least I hope they're going to open their API to allow third party apps to work with existing email, so someone will come up with app for that.
Btw, the other painful thing for me on Bold was their "one-way Google Mail sync". You do you work on mailbox TWICE, and that's just plain stupid. iPhone is IMAP so it just works. But iPhone has Google PUSH only as "Exchange" configure mailbox, which is allowed only one at this current iPhone OS -- which is their own stupid thing.
Also, I am doing Google Sync for my calendar and Contacts. Calendar is just fine for me on Bold and iPhone, but Contacts -- well, on iPhone they come with more fields and actually with photos, and they sync them both way. With Bold - they have only essential data, no photos, no photos syncing. ;-(
It really hurts me to leave my BB in the box, but it's the way it is. I would even say if feels like I am giving up on old friend - but iPhone works for me right now for my tasks much better. And whatever people may say that it's "teenagerish" or anything - just line it up to what is important for you and what is not. Apparently my priority is not in games (even if iPhone has tons of them), but everything else is right for me. ;-)
This is just my personal experience. Hopefully it helps. :-)Last edited by westla7; 10-12-2009 at 12:07 AM.

I do agree with you on the message waiting light - that's kind of a cool feature which BB has.
As for the "no way to know the messages are there" -- the Mail icon actually does show unread count, the problem is that it will show them as unread unless you "open" every of them. It may not show this unread count if your Exchange filter "clears" this "onopened" status on the emails. I am using exchange and Gmail as exchange - it all depends what filters are you using -- because it works just fine for me. - 10-12-2009, 12:48 AM #21
Let's put it simply:
The iPhone, contrary to its name, is not a very good phone. Low volume, clumsy calling, etc. make day to day phone usage hard. The iPhone should be called "iApp." It just runs apps, one at a time. The phone app is just that, an app. - 10-12-2009, 12:50 AM #22
Agree on email - -- though I should say if you don't use IMAP on iPhone but POP instead it does work much faster, probably because it does not set up connection everytime you go to Mail app. Apparently, that's a secret sauce of Blackberry - as they do not have IMAP, all the email they download they keep on handheld - so it is faster.
But viewing Excel and/or PDF or Powerpoint on iPhone really is awesome. Bold is losing here much.
GPS as I said earlier not just easier, but works faster on iPhone.
I tried with both phones side by side.
Chatting - with BeejiveIM it works very good, though iPhone does not have really ringtone configuration for IM, does not have LID indicator for new chat messages.... so Bold wins big time here. - 10-12-2009, 01:10 AM #23
Nope... mail moved to folders by an Exchange rule, show the count on the folder, but it does not show the count on the Mail App icon. No matter what folders you select to "push", it still does not show the count there.
If you miss the "new message" notification sound, you will have no way to know there are new messages without browsing the entire folder list. I cheated by putting a "-" in front of my most important mail folders, the iPhone would force them to top of the list and it made it easier.
One additional feature that hasn't been mentioned: Background Tasks.
Beejive worked pretty well, but my group uses Google Talk and no reason to buy another app. - 10-12-2009, 03:12 AM #24
Another couple minor nits on the iPhone:
While on a call, incoming SMS and Mail sounds over the speaker.
* This happens in both of my cars when using the bluetooth hands free.
Lame....
