Default APN Settings

i figured out that whenever i download a file on my BB it downloads through the APN telstra.internet whereas regular browsing goes through blackberry.net

though i have an unlimited data usage plan i was told that it is only unlimited if i stay within the blackberry browser, and i guess the BB servers. i noticed on my online bill that i get charged whenever something comes through the telstra.internet APN, through everything through the blackberry.net APN is free

is there a way to make it so that downloads come through the blackberry.net APN? if i go into advanced options, then TCP/IP and make the APN blackberry.net will it stay like that, and not download through telstra.internet?

Thanks for this post, I've been wondering the exact thing. I posted a question almost exactly like this one in another forum and no one had an answer.

Not sure why yours does that.

I just assumed it goes through blackberry servers.

On my AT&T bill it always says wap.cingular.net, but I don't get charged for it.

I've downloaded a bit via WAP, I get my bill in a few days, I'll let you know how it turns out!

I have a "proper" unlimited plan, too...

I have the "blackberry solutions" plan. Unlimited email and unlimited internet usage. All with telstra. Last month my bill was normal, but I'm not sure how much downloading I did via WAP.
Costs me $30/month.

Yes mine is 30 a month for unlimited data and mail, but I get charged for wap as it doesn't go through the blackberry servers, and apparently that's the condition of my plan being unlimited.

Well if you change the APN settings to something that your provider doesn't use (or all options blank, for example) then your phone will not be able to connect with those credentials and thus you can only get data through your "Blackberry" plan and not through the APN settings at all. Keep in mind though, that some applications only work through APN.

For example, my provider does not offer APN connections to Blackberry devices - it is turned off in the system. Therefore there are some things that I cannot do with my phone, mainly tethering. I think if you are concerned with being charged for APN use, then you should just modify you APN settings so that your phone will not be able to connect that way. If you do this then you will not have to worry about it. Later if you find an application you want to use is not working, then you can change the APN settings back so they can connect again. Just remember that once you do this, you may be charged again and you can decide if that application is worth it to you or not.

Hey paul, I had a look at my bill yesterday. Itemized is all the data I used in my billing cycle, and everytime I used wap browsing it says "telstra.wap." But I'm not being charged for it-it lists the packet data but there is a zero charge for it.

I'd ring the telstra shop and find out what's up!
