Voice Recording in the background

Hi all,

I tried recording a lecture in class today and have come to realize that it's impossible to record something without 1) the screen being on & 2) without being in the voice recorder app. Meaning, it will not record in the background. Even if I do as much as switch to my homescreen or messages, it pauses. This is a major inconvience for me and I need recordings for lectures. Can someone suggest a solution or perhaps a solid alternative app that will function in the background?
