I don't know if whatsapp is free for just 12 months however it isn't bad. I use it to commicate with iphones.

It isn't as good as BBM in my view but it does the job.

What device will your "American friends" be using to communicate with you?

Yes, Whatsapp is only free for the first 12months then you have an annual fee of $1.99. I like it because it utilizes your number as your 'identity' on the network, so works just like SMS. Your friends need to have it installed too for it to work.

It depends on what your American friends often use. If they are more BBM users, gchat, yahoo..

like they say, it really depends. whatsapp is available on most platforms, so chances are if your friends uses a smartphone, they can install it. 1.99 for a year is bloody cheap for a good service to keep in touch with friends.

If your friends have a BB, BBM would be best.

If they are not on BB, try Kik. Though some users say it drains battery a tad bit faster.

I've tried LiveProfile and Kik. LiveProfile was a battery hog, verified by monitoring its CPU use even when I didn't use the app at all. Kik is much better in this respect. When not in use, it uses very little CPU. When in use, since it's using the radio for each message, it's comparable to any other IM app. It's the ones that drain the battery while "idle" that you want to avoid. From what I've read here, Kik used to be guilty of this, but after the last upgrade, a few weeks ago, is much better.
