Default Facebook Contact Picture Sync and BES Contact Sync

Has anyone had any issues with having both the FB contact picture sync and the BES contact sync enabled at the same time? I have enough overlap that it'd be worthwhile to do but I'm paranoid of messing up my BES sync and somehow having my contacts in Outlook (which I consider to be the master data, btw) get messed up.

Thanks.

Peter

I am curious if anyone has tried this as well. The pictures would be cool to sync with FB but I do not want my contacts duplicated or phone numbers changed either. The description in the app does not seem to be very clear about this so anyone who has tried this please chime in as to how it works, how well it works, and your experiences with overlapping data (if any)

If no one answers us I'll bite the bullet and try it next week when I have time to make the proper backups first.

After making my backup I went to enable it, only to discover that the option is "grayed out." Not sure if that means it detected the BES and *won't* work, or if there's an IT Policy in place through my company so that it *can't* work.

Well thanks for trying. Since yours didn't work, I have checked the box and trying it now. I'll report back tomorrow and let you know how it goes

I'm on BES and it is also grayed-out. I think in a previous version of facebook on my Bold 9000, I was still able to select it. Not sure if it's the .22 version or OS 5.0 causing it.

I think I've found the issue, at least for BES connected devices:

How to control Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 1.6 organizer data access - Airtime Manager Mobile Data Forum

So here's the path I'm headed down now:
  1. Install Fonebook which syncs contact pictures (and other stuff) from Facebook to Outlook
  2. Sync Facebook and Outlook
  3. Turn off Wireless Sync on my BB address book
  4. Sync address book via Desktop Manager
  5. Turn Wireless Sync back on
Theory says it should work, albeit more painfully than the preferred method. On the plus side I'll have the pictures in Outlook too.

Have you tried this? Did it work for you? I'm locked out because of BES also. Would love to have the sync of picture though....

Sorry I never posted my results of using the contacts application, here is a quick synopsis of what I found.

Once I clicked the box and saved I noticed the data transfer icon moving rapidly, however it seemed like whatever it did was fast and efficient. 2-3 minutes at most while using UMA (WiFi) however out of my 315 contacts only 67 are tied in with Facebook. Once the data transfer ended I synced up with my existing Outlook and found that none of the phone numbers or the format they were in changed. The only additions were company names of the contacts (ie where they work, or where they have listed at work) No information was uploaded and of course pictures are synced up with the current pic of the user.

Nothing to be scared of, however I would always preview your changes before accepting them in to your master list to be safe.

As for the BES issue, since I am using BIS I can't offer up any assistance for that one.

Worked! I was surprised at the amount of data that DM told me needed to be synced. I guess BES skips more than just pictures.

Anyway, I did it exactly as I described and it worked perfectly. I'll be doing it again from time to time as I update pictures in Outlook. Outlook remains the "master" data.

Now if I can just find a way to sync Gmail contacts with Outlook contacts... Guess that's my next project.

Thanks!

P.S. Whenever it said there was a conflict I had Outlook override BB.

For those curious, I found a utility called gSyncit that works perfectly. Enjoy!

This workd perfect. And allows me to edit my phone contacts on my computer which is easier. One question though. If i delete a contact on my phone does outlook over rule it? Do i have to del it on both? Just in outlook?
