Default unable to expand attached devices on the bas

I am generating a procedure for manual device software updates to some of the older devices in our environment. One 2 out of the 4 machines I have tested this procedure on, I can't expand the "attached devices" link under the DEVICES portion of the BAS. I click on the little plus icon next to attached devices and it changes to a minus like it is expanding, but nothing happens. I have tried this multiple times, multiple ways: plug usb cable into pc, then launch bas, launch bas then plug inusb cable, etc. It knows the device is there, because it always asks for the password, and some machines see it just fine. What gives? I can't send out this procedure if the BAS won't cooperate. I am using the same device and same admin account on all four machines, so it is something with the machine itself, but I don't know what. Help????

Default Attached Devices Missing Device

I had this IDENTICAL problem. I installed a fresh copy of Server2003 on a Dell PE1850. Installed BES EX and had no problems with the install. Went to activate via USB cable. Connected the phone, detected OK in Device Manager. Opened BAS and clicked "Attached Devices" and NOTHING. Tried EVERYTHING before calling RIM support. We got it working, and here's how...

Any or ALL of these steps may fix your problem. This is a software flaw in BES EX and how it manages ActiveX in IE7.

Step 1 - USB Device Drivers
Download and install latest USB Modem Drivers for Blackberry phones on the server/workstation you wish to use to activate phones.

Step 2
If already detected, open Device Manager, highlight smartphone, right-click, UNINSTALL. Detach device and reboot. Attach device and confirm drivers re-installed. <<CHECK ATTACHED DEVICES>>

Didn't work?

Step 3 - Communication Components
Close BAS. Open Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall "Blackberry Device Communication Components". Start BAS. Log in. Allow communication components to re-install. <<CHECK ATTACHED DEVICES>>

Didn't work?

Step 4 - ActiveX and IE
Disconnect device from USB port/cable. Open BAS in IE. Add BAS to your Trusted Sites. Close all IE windows. Open Internet Options from Control Panel. Select Security tab. Start with "Trusted Sites". Click "Custom Level". ENABLE ALL ACTIVEX FEATURES. Select to "Intranet" zone. Repeat. Select "Internet" zone. Repeat. (yes, this will cause red flags for your internet zone). Click OK, OK. Close Control Panel.

Open IE and go to BAS. Log in. Attach device.

This is where it started working for us.

Go back and set the unsecure ActiveX settings in Internet zone to "Prompt" to open internet back up.

Did this work???

Sad to say, nothing worked. This machine has IE6 on it, but I have another machine with IE6 installed and it works just fine. I did everything you suggested. I was really hoping the last option would work, as it seemed like it would, but that didn't, either. Glad you got it to work on yours.

I enabled all the active x settings per above, and no go. BTW, I had an old version of .net and installed a newer version, and it worked TEMPORARILY!!! I logged out of the BAS, and back in WITH THE SAME ACCOUNT, and it just didn't work anymore. Then I updated with an even newer version of .net and it worked again, but again, only TEMPORARILY. I logged out and back in and it quit working again. So I am back to square one. : (

I think I figured out how to fix this. It looks like it needs at least version 3.5 of .net installed on the client. There can be multiple versions of .net installed, but if 3.5 isn't installed, it doesn’t "hold" the settings. I have tested the problem machine several times and it seems to work. Even if the trusted sites in my security settings in IE doesn't contain the bes and even if the security is set to default, so active x isn't loosened up, I can still get it to expand. It seems to take a minute after I have entered the password for the device, and sometimes I need to refresh the screen or log out and back in again, but it does eventually expand the attached device settings. I just thought I would let you know.
