Default Non approved Phone on BES server

To those BES admins....I work for a company that uses BES. Its a large company. Usually when a new device is released it takes at least a month or two for them to test the security before they approve activation on the server. In the past, I would buy the newly released device and just not have access to corp email for awhile. My question is this....

I know when I get a replacement(broken phone), I have to call IT so that can add my PIN to the server, then I can use a web-based activation once I get the okay to activate email. If I just call and say that I got a replacement, instead of an upgrade, and give them the new pin.....is there anything the PIN says about the device model? Will I be able to activate, say a new bold touch or Monaco with them still thinking that its a Storm 2, or will the BES server reject activation because of a unauthorized device?

Thanks!

I can't say for sure as we are not set up that way and I've never tried it, but depending how their server is set up, I suspect the activation would fail. During activation, the phone provides information about itself. I believe it is possible for the admins to specify an "allowed" device list. So if they have done this, then the server would most likely reject the activation.

When I bring up my list of activated accounts/phones, I get a list of what phone each account is associated with. Information like provider, phone number, and model is given. It's possible an eagle-eye admin may notice your "unauthorized" phone after the fact and call you on it.

Thank you for the responses. It's definitely not worth it. I also hope my firm eventually approves bluetooth tethering, so I can use the Blackberry Bridge for my Playbook.

You can set in BES approved types of phones to be used based on model.

The IT policy may be configured with 'Enterprise Service Policy' enabled. If this is enabled, you will not be able to activate your phone unless it's on the list.
