Question new User's question

Just issued a couple of BlackBerrys to a couple of new users here at work. One of them asked if it was possible, when he was trying to make a phone call, for only the contacts with phone numbers to appear in the list. If you see what I mean ...

Sorry if it's a bit off the wall but I haven't a clue how to answer that question.

When your dialing from contacts there is no way to just show the ones with phone numbers.

One could create a catagory titled say "Phone contacts" and for all the contacts that have phone numbers, edit each one and add them to the "Phone contacts" catagory.

Then you should be able to filter based on catagory for "Phone contacts" when you view the contacts. But that would be from main contacts folder, I'm sure you can set a filter on the dialing screen as it pretty much just comes up with what ever you type unless you hit "Options" and select "Call from Contacts"

I believe the idea by design is that all the contacts would be entered with phone numbers.

On a lighter note, I'm still teaching the wife that she doesn't have to have seperate contacts for each person in her contacts such as "Mom - Home", "Mom - Cell" and "Mom - Work".

FYI - I did this on my Tour running v5 of the device OS, I created a "Phone ONLY" catagory and in contacts filtered it to show only entries in the "Phone ONLY" catagory.

After in the car I tried calling someone by the normal, start typeing their name and with the filter turned on, I was only able to see the entries that were in the "Phone ONLY" as I typed.

Kinda flustered me for a bit later in the afternoon as a person I was trying to call which I knew was in my contacts but wasn't added to the filter catagory WOULD NOT show up until I went back to the contacts and turned the filter off - This would also make a good practical joke to fellow BB user if you had a few minute alone with their BB.

So if you make a catagory for phone number only contacts and filter on such catagory, when you go to dial, you will be presented with only the filtered contacts (Of course this is with newer 5 OS on a Tour, Older OS's may not have this?)

Has the user tried just typing the first few characters of the contact name on the home screen then hitting the call key - the device does pattern matching of whatever is typed reducing the potential candidates with each key pressed. This is normally much quicker than scrolling through the contacts list in the address book.
