Yeah. In my case it was something along the lines of "Hey! We are getting BlackBerries. Since you handle cell phones, you're in charge. Make it work."
I doubt any company without a couple thousand BB users would hire anyone specifically to be a BES Admin. It's usually just an add-on duty.

Same here. Self taught. Was told I had 1 month to get the company a BES and get it up and running in production. Got a BES Express going in the lab and went from there.

It's usually part of the '...and other duties as assigned...' line in your job description. |

If a company has a "messaging" expert, be it Domino, Groupwise or Exchange, then they will usually be the one asked to maintain the BES as close integration between the two systems is required. Perhaps it is worth looking at developing your messaging skills, supplemented by some BES.

When started with my company they were still using BIS to access their OWA email.
I kinda created the job as the BES Admin by showing them what they were missing. Was not a hard sell what so ever, exspecially with the free price tag of Blackberry Professional Software.

you'll need to decide if you want to be a solaris, unix, or windows network administrator. once you've decided, get the network administrator certification for that platform.than you should have that much of capibality that how to solve problems, than you can be a best administrator.

Like a lot of others here, I'm self-taught with the BES. One day my old boss came to me a few years ago and said, "So-and-so is leaving, do you want to take over the BES?" Aside from having only owned a BlackBerry for only a few weeks at that time, I was worried, but what was I going to say, no?
It took a lot of calls to RIM, tinkering, putting out a few fires, and re-engineering the environment (moving from MSDE database to SQL, cutting over users to a new BES server that I built from the ground up) to get really comfortable with supporting BES.

The fun part when I got handed the BES Admin duties they wouldn't give me a Blackberry. It didn't take long to get one after Senior Management were out of town and I didn't have one to test with.

The only place that I know of which actually hires directly for BES admin is on military installations. They had one for where I used to work, it paid like $85K a year and that's ALL you did!

Basically this is correct with knowing how a BES functions. The certs are good to take because they truely do make sure you understand all of the functions as well as how to install it.
