Default Enterprise activation - BIS Plan and Full BES Server

All,

I have done lot of research on this but there doesnt seem to be any solution for my problem. I work in a bank un UK and our company has a full blackberry enterprise server. I have an activation password from our administrator and want to activate my personal blackberry to receive emails. have a BIS plan here in UK and didn't see any option for enterprise activation. I read that carriers don't push down this service on your phone until you take a BES plan. Then later I read about some application that RIM released that allows you to do enterprise activation for BIS only plans. However that works only if your company has BES Express.

So is there any way I can use BIS plan to activate on a full BES.

Thanks,

Although there are plans to change how all this works in the future, I'm pretty sure your carrier has to add BES to your plan. That usually means they add to your bill as well, sigh.

Essentially you are correct.
What RIM did since there is no longer taxes on BES plans there is an app in app world that allows you to activate a BES acct through BIS wirelessly as long as your comapany DOES have a BES.

You only need to ask the person that handles your IT at work for a passcode and with the app you DL to your BB you enter your emial address and passcode and this will activate it. It will then push the required service book or books to your phone and that is it.

This is correct. At this time there is no way to get BIS connected to full BES server.

The only other option you may have is if that BES server is running on top of an Outlook Exchange server. If so, Outlook Web Access may be (or could be) enabled. BIS can connect to OWA (I did this when our office had a BES server running). You won't get full syncing capabilities - have to load up DM and connect directly to your PC for contacts and calendar syncing - but at least you can get and send emails this way.

I thought that app is only for BES Express, which does allow for BIS connection.

YES you are right and I might not have fully elaborated but that is true. It is in the test section I believe of app world.

It is a way though for a user to have BES access through their BIS acct data plan.

This is the original article posted here on CB last week:

New App Allows BES Activation with BIS Data Plan | CrackBerry.com

So I tried activating with the BIS Plan (using RIM activation app) just to see what happens. As predicted, it got stuck at contacting server and didnt move forward.

I am guessing most of the cheap BES express plans that carriers here in UK offer might have same issue. Does anyone have suggestion on cheapest BES plan here in UK that allows me to access email on full BES server (not BES express)

To truly get on to BES your company has to have a BES data plan in which you must contact your IT person for the company and request he sets you up with BES and then and only then you will bew pushed the correct service books to access your companies corporate email.

Your company does not have to have a BES data plan, you do on your BlackBerry. The service book for enterprise activation does not exist because your carrier has not sent it to your BlackBerry. I have read and actually got the 'Enterprise Activation' service book sent to my 8900 by doing the following.

Go into 'Options' then 'Advanced Options' then 'Host Routing Table'. Once there press the menu (BlackBerry) key and then click on 'Register Now'. In a few moments my messaging app got an email stating the device was registered on the network. Then back in the 'Advanced Options' area was the 'Enterprise Activation'. I was then able to activate wirelessly.

Mind you, I am using BESX at my office but I do not have the BES data feature from AT&T. So this may not exactly fit your sitch, but you could try it.

Worst case scenario is you will have to purchase a full BES data add-on to your cellular service.

Good luck.

You're only restricted if your company chooses to restrict you. By default that is not the case.

This is the official KB:

KB21209-How to check if a BlackBerry smartphone can be used with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express

In reality it has a lot more to do with what service books are pushed out with your carriers version of BIS, which is a general term, as internally, there are 100s of different BIS tariffs carriers can select.

Any of the Prosumer Type A BIS plans should be able to activate with BES and officially activate to a BESX.

It is also dependant on the SRP of your BES server, some of the older ones won't route properly to BIS plans.

Any more questions just ask
