Default Can you update OS on device through BES?

I am supporting three tours and hopefully will be seeing an official release of 5.0 soon. When we were on BIS and Verizon/RIM released an update it was easy to to do an OTA. The one time I had a storm I remember 5.0 came through desktop manager but that was automatic. I just plugged the Storm in and DM picked up on the updates and ran it.

So now all the BB's are on a new BES 5.0. The three tours are the only devices not running 5.0. When the update gets released is this something easily done through BES? Nobody really connects to DM anymore since I put them on BES and it's all synced on it's own. Would I need to install DM on their machines and run the process and then reactivate on BES? Do I have to wipe handheld before?

So many questions....

yes plug into bbdm, you can have all phones done on one computer one at a time or everyone do their own. no need to wipe prior, reactivating i believe will be necessary.

If your device is activated on BES your admin has the ablity to push device OS updates to your device if you are running 4.5 or higher. While it can be done by device manager, it can be done without however your admin has to setup the device OS for your device and then designate such for your device.

By plugging you BB into DM, most likely you are receiving the update from RIM and not your BES, it's simply the DM that is detecting that a newer version is available for you. If you BES admin pushes it, such can happen without connecting and they can even disable non-BES device OS updates if they prefer.

If your admin pushes the device OS to you, re-activation to BES isn't necessary, usually if you do it on your own while activated, you will need to re-activate.

So the answer to your question is yes IF your device is already on 4.5 for higher, your BES is 4.2 or higher AND your admin has setup and deployed the device OS on the server.

When I said I support I meant I am the BES Admin. However since this is new to me I was unaware of the capability. I have 3 tours among the 20 others I am supporting. So my question was HOW?

I am using BES 5.0 so you said 4.x or higher was capable. I went through BAS and didnt see any update device OS options. How would I push the OS update to the tours once 5.0 releases?

Under software you should have an option for blackberry device software, then you create a share to were your downloaded device package(s) reside at create/giv aname for the particular device OS software app you are creating like "Update to 5.02.xx for Storms".

Once you have your device OS software app created, you can then assign them to the users and devices.

To be frank, I have done this one 4.1 but I'm just now running 5.0 for my GroupWise system (I'm a beta tester) but the same in BES 5 should apply for all version of email.
