Default BPS - New phones dont activate

Afternoon all,

We have 5 users setup to use BIS.

When BPS came out, it had one free license so installed it on our SBS2003 and set it up for one user - all good.

Now the other users want push email so i bought the BES licenses and set about doing the same.

However none of them want to activate. It was a while ago since i set the first phone up (a STORM) but dont think ive missed anything out trying to set this one up (an 8310)

I called the people who sold us the phones and they said we were only setup for BIS and we'd have to pay extra for BES. Fair enough, but why does one phone already work with BIS? They couldnt answer that.

Any thoughts? All help appreciated.

So, a bit more detail.

When trying to activate, the phone just says "activating....retrying"

Looking at our SPAM filters, the blackberry activation email is being received and delivered to exchange.

Looking in the SBS applicaiton event log, the only message i see with the user's details in is:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: BlackBerry Policy Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20000
Date: 27/03/2010
Time: 16:58:00
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
{J@ourdomain.co.uk, PIN=2XXXXXX, UserId=6}RequestHandler::GetDataFromDBforWRP - Unable to find SRPId for user /o=OURDOMAIN/ou=first administrative group/cn=Recipients/cn=USER

So, activation emails are coming in and out - but still wont activate OTA.

Any thoughts

The one phone that works may already have had a BES plan setup on it. Check "Manage Connections" off of the main menu, then choose "Services Status". That will tell you if the phones have BIS, BES (or both data plans)

The fact that the activation email is generated and arrives means your phone is on the BES plan.

Look at the Blackberry logs, specifically the one with *_MAGT_* in the name, search for network@etp and any associated error messages.

Thanks for the replies.

Glen, I looked in the log put in bold below where i think the faults are. I could use some help deciphering the log a bit further though.

Ive copied everything that seem to occur within a specific timeframe (Note ive had to replace the work "email" with "em.ail" to get through crackberry filters..

@Tiassa - That surprises me, but if that is your experience then it is something jacksol should reconfirm

@jacksol - Take a look at KB04829 on RIMs knowledge base, cause 2 seems the most likely candidate.

Here is the thread (kind of a "sequel" to the one I referenced earlier) about my having to add the BES plan to my phone:
