Default BPS License

For some time now I was under the impression that if you bought a BB smartphone that it came with a free license from BPS? I guess I'm wrong? I thought if you had a PIN you could go to a registration page on the BB site and register it for the BPS license??

Do you mean BPS or BIS? BPS, the Blackberry Professional Server, is a reduced functionality version of BES The BlackBerry Enterprise server. You have to be running your own mail server in order to use it.

BIS the Blackberry Internet Service is set up by your wireless carrier, typically you will have to go to your carrier's website and do the setup there.

This is a link to various carrier's BIS sites

BPS...we have an Exchange server and BPS that has been running for a couple of years now with 5 phones on it. I don't remember buying any extra licensing for the phones when I installed the software. I do remember I had to get the PIN from each phone then register it on the BB (somewhere) which gave me the license to install on the BPS server.

I'm pretty sure that the BPS came with a license for 1 Blackberry, and that you had to buy a BB CAL if you wanted to connect additional phones.

Since you are running Exchanged, you might want to consider upgrading to BESX, the Blackberry Enterprise Server eXpress, which is free to download and doesn't require CALs

Yeah I just read about the BESX software. I'll run the upgrade today.

FYI it isn't an "upgrade" it is a "Uninstall/Reinstall", and a non-trivial task at that.

It may be easier on Exchanged since RIM is so tied into MSFT,
