It comes down to how you have your Domino server configured. If it is capable of sending SMTP mail (ie if the Routing tasks are both Mail Routing and SMTP mail routing) then it is likely that the Domino server will send the message out directly to the internet. The Domino server on my BESX box is configured to only do mail routing not SMTP routing and when I replied the message got transferred to the non-BES server. Here's the server log:

This is the inbound message that the BESX server received from the Blackberry
09/29/2011 10:17:58 AM {my name here} Receiving message, RID=552363862, TID=45357, Date=9/29/2011 10:18:00 AM; message deposited to local mail.box

09/29/2011 10:17:58 AM Router: Transferred 1 messages to NotTheBESXServer/TIASSA via Notes
And this is that message being transferred over to the other server to be sent out

Make sense?

Default Blackberry Mail Routing Question

I was recently asked by an auditor to clarify when the BES server sends mail directly. I was always under the assumption that the Domino Server that housed the mail files was the only server that routes outgoing mail, but it would appear that when users reply to messages on their Blackberry device, they go out directly from the BES server. But it appears new messages are sent out the main Domino server. Can someone please clarify if and when the BES server would route outgoing mail.

Environment:
Domino 8.0.2 server housing all mail files
BES 5.3 MR4 and Domino 8.0.2 with no mail files
