Default BES & WiFi

Hi All,

I have recently been asked to look into the use of WiFi to get the email's for user's who are connected to a corporate BES.

The user wants to be able to access there email's with the GPRS/3G switched off and just have WiFi on, would there email's be pushed to there blackberry?

Ive had a look around the forums and it seems that some people say it is possible and other's say it isnt.

Also my user has asked if it is possible to navigate to the Web Access page (exchange) on there blackberry over wifi without a carrier data plan. From my knowledge this isn't possible.

If anyone could just verify my presumtion's, would be great

Thanks

Dan

The answer is probably, it depends. I have a Tmobile device with no data service (SIM removed). I can do normal BB/BES operations (email, calendar, intranet browsing, internet via proxy, etc.) from that device - but I believe there are applications that require carrier radio access.

Some carriers will not allow Enterprise activation without a carrier data plan.

I have used 8350i's that were previously activated with Sprint but later deactivated on BES without even the device having a valid phone number but only using Wifi access points inside my network were the BES resides

Activated the device to a BES directing using USB to on the server, then after it's activated, used the Wifi to sync it. Worked fine as long as I was on the same internal network as my BES, once outside on the real intranet it was no go since it couln't directly see my server.

Any other use of Wifi outside on the internet most likely won't work for email as already mentioned due to service book restrictions and definatly not BES email as that needs the wireless RIM network which you can only reach via your wireless provider's network (Sprint, AT&T, Vrzn and such).
