Question Bes user account deleted

Hi All,
New to BES support. A user with an 8520 that has had it for a year can send emails but not receive. It is a company phone and all company phones should be on our BES (4.1 - I know it's old!). However, when I search for him, his email address or his phone PIN I keep getting told that he doesn't exist.
Two questions:
1) is it possible for a BES phone to send emails when there is no BES account associated to the phone?
2) assuming the account has been deleted, is it just a matter of recreating the account and getting the user to reactivate the device or will I need to get him to wipe the device?

TIA
DS.

Default

On the device under advanced options, Enterprise activation, what is displayed?

I wouldn't think that device could do anything without being having an account established on BES even if once did and was later deleted.

Any chance the device is using BIS instead of BES to pull email down by IMAP/POP3 and those server addresses have changed over time making the receiving server invalid so that this device can only send email?
