BES push APPs
Maybe I'm missing something but this hasn't been as simple a task as was described in the announcements with BES 5.0. If someone has a suggestion on how to simplify, please speak up.
We were told there would be ALX/COD files readily available and that pushing out controlled APPs would be easy.
I would agree that the BES server part is simple enough but the APP files are nearly never published. All I can find as an alternative is to get your hands on all the phone models and OS versions so you can generate files after downloading the APP. That's not possible and even if we went through the effort once, how often will we be doing it when updates are published.
In a recent attempt I couldn't even get a RIM value added APP to run. All the files were available for download but after install I found that it was only supported through BIS browser access. Our system is locked to browse via the BES server and it failed. This is a RIM published APP and it won't run through BES, REALLY?
At one point I had decided to just settle for the APP codes to allow the users to do their own install through AppWorld but then RIM decided to lock out AppWorld so that every one of my users has to go through a registration and password mess. I'm sure there is some value to this but once again, not very business friendly. Oh, and maybe someone in the RIM webmaster department could reprogram the page to display the APP code instead of having to hunt and peck it from the URL. It just looks lame that it isn't presented.
To me the only reasons to have a BlackBerry are security and manageability. If RIM can't streamline this then we have no argument when the peasants start waiving pitchforks and asking for iPhones.
RIM can't be responsible for 3rd party APPs but the RIM published ones are few and iffy.
Obviously Apple has made a good market share appear through the iTunes store but RIM is too far behind to start playing that game with AppWorld and forgetting about businesses.
