Default BES Noob needs help setting up first user/activation

Finished my first install on a SBS2008. Seems like everything seems to be ready to be configured. All my services are running. I confirmed that my SRPID is enabled and "connected to the blackberry infrastructure"

I have an account setup on the exchange server that I have been using for testing ttest@domain.com. Trying to set this account to sych to a test phone. I must be crazy but i don't see how to configure this user. I see the user in my user list but i don't see a way to merge a PIN with this user. Does anyone have any good documentation or pointers? I don't need any crazy policies. I just want to get one phone up so i can test pushing out various components.

First thing that i noticed when i attemted to login to BAS is that using active directory to login failed no matter how i enter the info. Has me a bit worried. I can login without using AD no problem.

First off, I have BES 5.0 for Lotus Notes. If you have something else, your results may vary.

You have to do an enterprise activation to associate a PIN with an user account. There are a couple ways to do this. If you can connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable, then the easiest way to do it is to plug it in, and go to Attached Devices, Manage Current Device. Click on Assign the current device to a user. Search for and select your user, then associate the user.

If you can't plug the phone in, then you will have to set a password and do an OTA activation. Go to the user account, then click Specify an activation password. Put in the password there. Then on the phone, go to Options, advanced options, enterprise activation. Put in the email address, and the password you set, then wait for the activation to complete.

As for loging in to BAS with an active directory account, I had to add an administrator user for each active directory account I wanted to log in. Make sure you set the proper role. On the upside, these users do not use up a CAL.

First question I have is this BES Express or the the full blown? The phone will not accept an Enterprise activation until the phone is partitioned by either the carrier or from the BlackBerry Expert support center. Once the handheld is partitioned, it will then accept the enterprise activation.

BlackBerry Expert Support center will allow admins to perform a device rediness check per device and partition the device for BES Express. If they are using the full blown BES, most carriers such as Verizon, require a BES plan through the carrier that will then partition the phone for full-blown BES.

Secondly, open BlackBerry Server Configuration on the server running BES Start > All Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > BlackBerry Server Configuration and click the Administration Service - AD Settings tab and make sure you have a specific account for BES to run as. The documentation recommends creating an AD user called besadmin and it is very ill-advised to use the Administrator account or any account that is part of the Domain Admins security group.

For full documantation, we'll need to know first, whether you have BES Express or if you paid the thousands of dollars for the full blown version...
