Thumbs up Bes 5.0 ha / dr

Just wanted to drop a note for any Admins that haven't messed around with the built in HA, its definitely worth looking at. We installed a standby BES on a remote VM, very simple to do, extremely easy to failover, and best of all.. Free. Be a BES Hero and implement a HA/DR solution for free

Looking to implement this in the next few months, what OS and SQL versions did you use?

I agree it's easy and an awesome feature, especially for the price!

I have to wait till I can upgrade one of my remote offices servers to be able to handle a few VMs before I can implement it though. booooo

Just an FYI, you cannot use SQL 2008 with BES 5.0

Thats not true:
database management system
Any of the following database management systems:
MSDE 2000 SP3
Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 SP3 (32-bit or 64-bit)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (32-bit or 64-bit)
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 (32-bit or 64-bit)
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition (32-bit or 64-bit)
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition SP1 (32-bit or 64-bit)

System requirements: BlackBerry Enterprise Server databases

I run two independent BES/Exchange environments with no issue on 2008 64bit SQL. No additional changes needed to be made.. Right out of the box.

There are lots of compatibility issues with SQL 2008 and RIM does not support nor recommend this configuration with BES 5.0. SQL 2005 is recommended with BES 5.0.

I guess RIM better get on updating their technical docs that completely contradict that statement... I think we'll stick with it in the meantime though.

Actually RIM's documentation is correct. The URL provided above is not best to use when determining what is best for your environment. It does not state what version of BES that is for. That could have been BES 3.6 for all we know.

BES 5.0.1 *IS* compatible with SQL 2008, BES 5.0 is not. Because of this, that generic compatibility page is listing what BES in general will work with.

If you want to know about BES 5.0, I suggest you use the following URL:

BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange - Manuals and Guides

http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/...tall_Guide.pdf
Page 13 states that 2000/2005 is required (not SQL 2008)

THe original question asked of me was "What OS and SQL versions did you use". I answered him correctly and our infrastructure is fully supported by RIM. I used the term BES 5.0 generically to refer to that entire version of software - I assume that people keep up with their updates and MR. Kinda like saying its "Windows XP" compatible.. most people wouldn't get technicaly about is that "XP SP1, SP2, SP3?" Do you have Hotfix 12343 applied? etc.

As for the document I linked to - That in fact was not for 3.6... I guess you never clicked it - otherwise you would have seen that it was specifically for 5.0.1.

I'm not trying to get in a pi$$ing match here, but to Generally say that SQL 2008 isn't supported is not exactly an accurate statement. My intent was that anyone reading this thread that has an interest in using SQL 2008 as a backend knows that it its certainly an option and a supported one by RIM giving they meet certain minimum requirements (5.0.1).

This thread is about BES 5.0 not BES 5.0.1. The compatibility listings between service packs of BES are completely unrelated. Therefore you cannot and should not quote a different version. And I did view the link you posted.

Again, SQL 2008 is NOT compatible with BES 5.0, so don't try it. If you do, RIM will not support it. If you call RIM they will not support any issues you have due to an unsupported environment. Basic issues I'm sure they'd help you with, but actual issues, you're out of luck.

Considering I'm the one that started the thread - I know what version I was referring to - I completely current and up to date 5.0. Now i'm ending this useless banter. Go hijack someone elses thread.
