Default BES 5.0.2 Exchange 2010, MAPI or EWS?
Single Exchange server, all roles installed.
Seperate dedicated BES.

Is MAPI any less reliable?

What functionality do I gain by using EWS?

MAPI is not replaced by EWS. CDO is replaced by EWS. And yes it is better.
