Default Activating a BIS on a BES server

Rather puzzled.

As far as I can see from researching it is not possible to activate a BIS handset on a BES server (notBESX!)

However I have a user who wants to switch sims.

BB Bold 9700 is on BES and is working. However o2 have confirmed it is only a BIS contract.

Colleagues of mine said it is possible to activate to BES but you have to use a cable.

So switched sims, which have identical data plans, and tried activating it using desktop manager.

Emails are sent to device when on cable, and even if device ejected from usb, but as soon as not connected it fails to deliver. This to me looks like it is because it doesnt have a BES lan, simple.

However how does the previous sim work ? Putt it back in and the BES server is showing emails being delivered!

Like I say Im baffled as didnt think it was possible but it is clearly working with the old non BES sim ?!??!!?

Most carriers will allow you to use BIS with a BES plan. I'm wondering if the non working BB has an IT policy on it that prohibits BIS use. That's my only guess.

You could always add the BES data plan, activate the new phone and then revert back to the BIS data plan. (If o2 allows that)

The carriers are getting money for nothing seeing all the BES data plan does is push a couple more service books to your device so you can activate OTA.

Been a while since I checked back.

This puzzles me.

So I have a BES server, why would I pay for BES on each handset if I can use BIS dataplan ?

I still havent worked out how some of the phones are working, they dont have BES accounts but apparently all functions, Calendar etc work ?

Most providers sign you up for a fixed contract, otherwise everyone would surely do this ?

Yes you can connect a BIS phone to a BES server, you just can't do a wireless sync you have to it through the USB cable connected to the BES server, it may even work through desktop manager on the users machine.

A.

A BIS device on a BES/BESX server is a hit and miss. I have devices that work and some that no matter what I tried I couldn't activate them until I got them on a BES data plan. The support rep from Rogers-CA confirmed that, although none of them are supposed to work, some do.
Cheers,
