Phone not recognising lower case "i"

My phone stopped to type the letter "i" - it is not a keyboard problem - it types "i" but without the dot, and the character is then not recognized in contacts etc.
When I type upper case "I", it works.

I do not think it is a keypad issue, as it is the same for the physical as touch screen buttons.

First thing I'd do is pull the battery and cycle power.

Done the battery removal thing, restarted a number of times, checked software version - I have basically tried everything I could think of, repeatedly - still no dot on the "i"
