On my 9720, when I get a LED notification, as usual it flashes, but it is under the black plastic front. next to this on the left is what looks like another LED, but I have no idea why its there or what it is for?

Any ideas? Was it meant to be a camera and they dropped the idea?

It could be, I don't remember having once on my 9320. Is it only visible because its a touch screen?

Make a call and cover it, if the screen turns off then it's a proximity sensor.

Possibly, to avoid touchscreen inputs while the phone is close to your cheeks

Present only in touchscreen devices to avoid screen touches while you're in a call

oh i see what you are talking about. it looks like a camera to me, but 9720s doesn't have front facing cameras so it could be a proximity sensor... Does anyone know what the extra LED is for on the front of the phone?-blackberry-9720-black_-500x500.jpg

***edit: 9720's have proximity sensors so that must be it http://gadgets.ndtv.com/blackberry-9720-974

    Proximity to what or who?
It's there to give us something to complain about!

But, seriously...It's obviously a design defect!

And why didn't I get one with MY phone? huh?

Proximity to your pretty face. This is so that when your face touches the screen, it wouldn't activate any on screen buttons accidentally.

You may also find another sensor on other models that detects ambient lights.
