If you can buy it very cheaply and you don't need a very good internet browser then it might be an okay choice.

You'd be better off getting a Classic in my opinion. If you want something cheaper, the Q5 is a great device and is still head and shoulders above the 9720.

I know someone who didn't like the Q5 and went back to a 9720.

As you say the Classic might be a better move but it's going to be 4 - 5 times as expensive as a 9720

The 9720 needs a BIS plan from your carrier. Some carriers have been dropping that plan so make sure it's available before you buy one. Any BB10 phone doesn't have that restriction and can be used on any data plan.
I switched from a 9780 to the Z30 and I would never switch back, if you can get a Z10, Q10 or any other BB10 phone you'll likely like it much better, there should be some pretty good deals with them as the Z10/Q10 are now 3 years old.

To each their own, but having a Q5 in the household I think it's the most underrated BB10 device to date. Not to mention far more functional by today's standards than a 9720 will prove to be. I'm sure OP could pick one up for like $100. Just my two cents.

Absolutely would recommend the Q5 if available. Only issues are a spotty GPS, and limited storage, but head and shoulders above any BB7 device IMO.

It depends if you want to stick with OS7?
If you want the latest and best BlackBerry experience with an physical keyboard board - you should step up to OS10.

You could buy the Q5 (which is the cheapest) or the Q10 or Classic (which are the real successors of the Bold Series) or even the Passport (which is a class over the others).

The 9720 is a good device for low price - but it's kinda "outdated" compared to OS10.

obviously price is the main factor for the op that's why he is considering a 9720.

For 85 USD, 9720 can be had from amazon. There's a catch though. It comes in purple. Lol. I'm also bent on buying it, as i'll only use it for calling and texting. But the color puts me off a little. The black and the white variants are a little more pricey at 140. Must be the inventory they're trying to clear up.

The Q5 has been under $100 in Canada several times now, although it can be hard to find. Perhaps used is a better option?

I tried going back to BB7, and for messaging was great but the one time I needed to look something up I remembered the pain. Great if you don't need that though. Recently sold my 9320, and still have a 9360 that I should probably get rid of as well.

9720 weighs less. Is and yet isn't BB7. Is not BB10. Costs about the same as a Q5. Music programs compatible with BB7 do not work on the 9720. Blackberry 7 is great, the 9720 is the only one I don't recommend of the phones I have tried. If you find one cheap and don't care about music apps it could be fine. I did like its super light weight. Mine is white not purple, they are the only BlackBerry that comes in purple but they don't com e just in purple. It's a good purple tbough.

It should cost considerably less than a Q5 and how do you mean it is and isn't OS7? It definitely is OS7.

That's what I read somewhere while doing a search, its a regional thing, the phone is not exactly OS7, due to the market it was intended for, which explains why BB7 apps I had on my Curve and Bold 9900 are not compatible with the 9720. Really the only reason I don't like it.

For me the Q5 price was not more than the 9720. Prices vary with the vendor and availability on the day you order. i highly recommend the Q5 over the 9720, even tho my 9900 has returned to being my favorite phone-phone, over both the Q5 and the Classic. 9900 doesnt have the fm radio now, and the 9720 does, I think it has to do with the 9900 wont get the 7.1 update.

I will post again if i see that reference to the OS difference.

so ok i can no longer diss the 9720, its now doing both Slacker and Live365, and i am a happy camper. you can type faster on this, its lighter, and it has a radio ... but comparing it to a Bold, hmmm. it is a nice little phone tho, kinda like the phone you'd throw in your bag without a cover on it.

Passport is my personal choice, but I use a 9720 for work. A great lightweight and rugged little device and battery life is phenomenal.

Been using the 9720 since September 2013 and would recommend it for anyone wanting a BBOS device . It's very underrated and actually has more features than the 9900.

I think BlackBerry phones, in general, are underrated. I'm going to miss them very much.
